Summary The Transport Engineer will be responsible for monitoring, planning, implementation, test and turning up of Long Distance (LD) Ultra Long Haul (UHL) transport network. The engineer will work to define, plan, and engineer LD ULH transport system overbuilds to include fiber acquisition, fiber testing, equipment acquisition, equipment installs, system test and turn up. This will include the deployment of fixed grid, flex grid as well as next generation LD ULH transport.
Responsibilities
Engineer LD ULH transport builds.
Respond to high failure rate systems outages
Free up space and power in support of network growth
Clear housekeeping order-wire from MDE gear. (Prerequisite to initiate a decommission project and power down of equipment)
Identify directional system/solution for new order-wire/housekeeping.
Monitor and plan LD network utilization and expansion.
Engineer and support site decommissioning work.
Maintain equipment inventory records and LD transport in engineering and provisioning database(s)
Job requirements and responsibilities are specific to engineering and design of ultra-long haul network transport equipment.
Database cleanup to ensure integrity of the system and network
Work w/ peers to ensure on time performance and delivery to support needs of business and customer
Handle escalations and troubleshoot, as needed
Familiarity with field concepts, practices, and procedures
Stay current on technological evolutions.
Must Have Skills
Experience in the telecommunications industry
Technical knowledge of long distance, ultra-long haul and OTN mesh networks
Equipment Knowledge specific to Sonnet/SDH, ULH, OTN mesh and WDM transport
Vendor Specific Knowledge: Ciena, Infinera, Fujitsu and varied long haul networks
System Knowledge: BGW or Granite (XNG), Coffee (Canvas), Nautilus, ICON, CCP, Venue, 3GIS/FIMS
Job requirements specific to engineering and design of ultra-long-haul transport
Experience managing complex processes and driving results
Experience with window-based programs and corporate database systems
Desired Skills
Strong understanding of engineering specs and drawings
Knowledge and experience with both equipment inventory and design
Strong working knowledge of the legacy network operating systems
Ability to assess, identify, and mitigate risks that could impact the business or project
Enjoy analyzing problems with autonomy to select and implement right solutions
Work well independently; but also, team players able to ensure best outcomes
Manage assignments & competing priorities, staying focused on important deadlines
Experience with window-based programs and corporate database systems
Education/Certifications
Bachelor’s degree in related technical field or relevant experience
Five or more years of telecom work experience
Pay Transparency: The typical base pay for this role across the U.S. is: $55.00 – $60.00 /hour. Non‑exempt positions are eligible for overtime at a rate of 1.5 times the base hourly rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 in a work week, or as required by state or local law. Final offer amounts, within the base pay set forth above, are determined by factors including your relevant skills, education and experience. Full‑time employees are eligible to select from different benefits packages.
