Position Summary
PLEASE NOTE: This position is for the UNM Gallup Branch, located in Gallup, NM, approximately 138 miles west of Albuquerque, NM. Funding available through 08/31/2026; continuance beyond that date is subject to the department's operational needs as outlined in APPM Policy #3200, Employee Classification.
The University of New Mexico has established branch colleges to serve the citizens of New Mexico and to provide the highest quality of education for students pursuing post‑secondary education at different locations throughout the state. Branch colleges respond specifically to the unique needs and multicultural backgrounds of their respective communities by offering community education programs, career education including certificate and associate degree programs, and transfer programs that prepare students for upper‑division entry into colleges and universities.
TRIO/Upward Bound at the UNM‑Gallup campus is a dynamic and diverse program seeking a highly motivated Student Success Specialist to join a team of professionals dedicated to creating pathways for college preparation and access for secondary school students. TRIO/Upward Bound is a federally funded program focused on providing opportunities for first‑generation and low‑income students, and students with disabilities to succeed in their pre‑college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. The success of the population served requires the ideal candidate to be a proactive problem‑solver and adept at working in a fast‑paced office environment with students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates must embody a student‑centered, holistic approach with a demonstrated commitment to student success. Familiarity with retention and student coaching strategies is a plus. Candidates must thrive in a collaborative team atmosphere, be proactive, and skilled in multitasking.
Key Responsibilities
Participates in and assists with advisement and/or consultative services for students of a specific targeted and/or underrepresented population.
Assists with outreach and retention activities designed to attract, retain, and serve students of the identified population; supports activity logistics, which may include compiling materials, participating in marketing efforts, and reviewing program effectiveness.
Assists in the preparation and delivery of workshops, presentations, and orientations related to the student success activities of the program.
Undertakes and/or participates in projects and programs designed to develop professional skills and expertise appropriate to the needs of the organization.
Receives guidance, training, and mentoring from professional personnel in planning and carrying out activities and assignments.
May assist higher‑level personnel in representing the program to internal and/or external constituencies, as well as advising student organizations related to the population of interest, as appropriate to the program.
May undertake related studies or enrichment programs as appropriate to the specific objectives of the operating unit.
Conditions of Employment
All regular, non‑temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US‑UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree; no previous experience required.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with TRIO and traditionally underrepresented populations or economically disadvantaged populations
Demonstrated experience in advising, instructing, mentoring and/or tutoring students
Demonstrated experience coordinating and organizing education programs, meetings, and/or special events
Demonstrated experience working independently and in a team environment
Additional Requirements Official transcripts will be required for hire.
