Job Details Department: Marine Science Institute
Location: MARINE SCIENCE INSTITUTE, Port Aransas, Texas
Position Type: Full‑time
Schedule: 40 hours per week (Mon‑Fri, schedule to be determined). On‑call and weekends as needed.
Responsibilities
Assist coworkers and act as a member of a team in a fast‑paced environment.
Assist electrician to maintain and repair electrical system, maintain lighting systems, and support related work projects. Drive UT vehicle to pick up supplies and equipment for job sites.
Balance air‑handlers (dampers) to maintain comfort levels in offices and lab areas.
Calibrate multiple heat‑pumps and timers for temperature control of seawater in lab tanks.
Repair seawater pumps and associated motors. Maintain records and prepare reports on repairs and service of HVAC equipment. Perform yearly cleaning of evaporated coils and cooling towers.
Replace air‑handler filters and belts. Conduct daily tests of chemical feeders and blow‑down pumps on cooling towers.
Service and repair split system A/C systems with a special emphasis on heat‑pump systems. Overhaul and service HVAC equipment, including adjusting valves, piping connections, removing and installing motors, thermostats, and humidistats.
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Licensed by the State of Texas as a Class A or Class B journey‑level HVAC mechanic.
Three years of experience in construction and/or maintenance and repair in a crafts trade or facilities maintenance. Experience must include three years journey‑level HVAC and controls mechanic experience, and at least one year in other related trades.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in air conditioning, heating, controls, refrigeration, maintenance and repairs.
More than five years of journey‑level experience in a combination of trades performing installation, repairs, renovations of multiple construction and systems types.
More than three years of journey‑level experience in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills with the ability to receive, respond, and follow through with written and verbal work‑related instructions from supervisors, customers, and co‑workers.
Driving Required This role requires a Class C driver’s license. Applicants must provide a current three‑year driving record from their state of residence. If not a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a resident.
Salary $40,000 – $50,000, depending on qualifications.
Working Conditions
Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards, high pressure and high‑speed equipment.
Confined spaces and/or outdoor work in inclement weather.
Alertness and careful attention required to avoid injury.
May require occasional extended work hours or on‑call duties.
Climbing of stairs and ladders.
Lifting and moving.
