Position Summary Administer oral and topical medications to residents. This individual must perform tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, and in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations. Also responsible for routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort, and well‑being of the residents.
Essential Responsibilities
Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with regulations and community policy.
Demonstrates knowledge of the 'five rights' of medication administration and records all medication given to residents based on their specific chart.
Takes and records vital signs of residents as assigned or required by certain medications.
Records the administration of medications and/or treatments, utilizing the computer system to enter and reference resident information.
Observes and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse immediately.
Administers PRN medications in accordance with regulations and facility policy.
Ensures antiseptic techniques, good hand washing practices for infection control, and universal precautions are in place and practiced.
Reports and, when appropriate, records any changes observed in condition or behavior of residents and unusual incidents.
Submits incident/accident reports to supervisor or Administrator within twenty‑four (24) hours after occurrence.
Communicates with medical staff, nursing service, and other department supervisors.
Supervises care staff in the absence of nurses.
Maintains, cleans, and organizes the Medication Room.
Maintains liaison with other department supervisors to adequately plan for resident activities.
Attends all required training, in‑service, and staff meetings.
May be subject to handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
May be subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, and conditions, including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
Maintains resident confidentiality, staff confidentiality, treating staff and residents with kindness, dignity, and respect.
Complies with Residents’ Rights rules.
Requirements
High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) diploma, or 1–3 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certified Medication Aide certification required.
