Position Summary
Assesses environmental conditions and conducts abatement measures as necessary. This position, under direct supervision, supports the Public Health Department and its efforts to ensure regulatory compliance throughout Mecklenburg County. These positions will be surveying known mosquito breeding sites for activity and treating as necessary. Applicants will receive training to acquire needed skills and knowledge to successfully perform tasks required.
Essential Functions
Conduct and perform field investigations to assess environmental conditions
Educate, guide, and direct property owners and residents on compliance with applicable laws and regulations
Participate in neighborhood educational campaigns and surveys
Perform control strategies as related to their environmental specialty
Compile and develop educational information to individuals and organizations
Minimum Qualifications
No experience required
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent
Combination of relevant education and experience accepted: Yes
Licenses and Certifications
Will require a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License
Must obtain and maintain a valid Mecklenburg County Vehicle Operator’s Permit
Annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check required
Preferred Qualifications
Currently enrolled in a post-secondary physical or biological sciences program
Public Health/Environmental Health program enrollment.
Knowledge
Applicable Federal, State, and local environmental compliance regulatory agencies
Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, codes, ordinances, rules, and regulations
Field observation techniques
Integrated pest management
Pesticide use and management as well as laws and regulations addressing such
Skills
Using a computer and related software applications
Maintaining field monitoring and data equipment
Preparing reports
Collecting field samples
Organizing, evaluating, and acting upon observations identified in the field
Abilities

Physical Demands
Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time (Frequently 10-24 hrs/week). Must be able to move from point X to point Y (Frequently 10-24 hrs/week). Operates a computer or other office equipment (Occasionally up to 10 hrs/week). Ascends/descends a ladder to perform duties or operate equipment (Occasionally up to 10 hrs/week). Must be able to review information on paper or computer (Occasionally up to 10 hrs/week). Must be able to discern information from long distances (Occasionally up to 10 hrs/week). Must be able to detect or distinguish flavor or smells (Occasionally up to 10 hrs/week). Must be able to carry/move equipment 10 lbs or less (Frequent), 11-20 lbs (Occasionally), 21-50 lbs (Occasionally). Over 100 lbs not applicable.

Works in outdoor exposed to weather conditions
