Position Title: Scientific Apparatus Engineering Department: Material Science and Engineering Location: Arlington Position Status: Full-time Work Schedule: Monday – Friday; 8:00am to 5:00pm
Salary is commensurate based on qualifications and relevant experience. Pay Basis: Bi-weekly.
Job Summary The Scientific Apparatus Engineering provides scientific expertise in advanced materials characterization techniques and analysis. Responsibilities include operation of advanced materials equipment, analysis of scientific findings, training users, preventative maintenance and repair, and daily upkeep of instrumentation and supporting equipment.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Operate, maintain, and provide scientific analysis and interpretation of results from advanced characterization equipment: x-ray equipment, optical and scanning and transmission electron microscopes, AFM, thermal analysis systems, FTIR, Raman, and Nanoindentation equipment, and specimen preparation-related equipment.
Instruct and train users (faculty, students, and postdocs) in operation, care of materials scientific equipment and provide scientific support regarding the theory behind these techniques.
Repair complex scientific equipment including equipment without diagrams and equipment that has been substantially modified.
Install, test, and determine operating parameters in scientific equipment, install and update software packages for operation and analysis.
Order parts, supplies and lab consumables and maintain smooth operation of the facility.
Check and maintain an inventory of equipment and spare parts, and prepare quarterly bills based on equipment usage.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in materials science and engineering or a related field and/or an equivalent mix of education and relevant experience in a similar role.
Experience in materials characterization techniques and analysis or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD in materials science or a related field.
Five (5) years of experience in materials characterization techniques.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Demonstrated strong technical knowledge.
Communication skills, critical thinking, and adaptability skills.
Ability to manage stressful situations.
