Equipment Mechanic I
Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Equipment Mechanic II
Performs advanced repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Inspects work performed by shop mechanics and/or contracted vendors. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in the construction of highways/bridges. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties Equipment Mechanic I
Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required, moves items related to these activities.
Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.
Troubleshot, tests, and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Equipment Mechanic II

Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Equipment Mechanic I
2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair (experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).
Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
Equipment Mechanic II
4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair (experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).
Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain one within 90 calendar days from date of employment.

Competencies Equipment Mechanic I
Knowledge of troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems.
Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade.
Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines.
Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems.
Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications.
Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures.
Read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics.
Equipment Mechanic II
Includes all competencies listed for Equipment Mechanic I as well as:
Automatic and manual shift transmission repair.
Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems.
Diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications.
Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes.
Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
Subject to noise.
Subject to vibration.
Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
Stooping – bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.
Kneeling – bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s).
Crouching – bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine.
Close visual acuity – work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.
Close visual acuity – using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts.
Visual acuity – operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills.
Visual acuity – operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
Visual acuity – determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures.
Conditions of Employment
This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
Note: The Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize medical marijuana as a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
Must be able to report for duty on a 24-hours basis to respond to emergency situations.
Will be required to work alternate schedules during an emergency response situation such as adverse weather events.
Will be required to travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.
