Equipment Mechanic I & II – Texas Department of Transportation Join the Texas Department of Transportation as an Equipment Mechanic I or II. We are looking for a skilled technician to perform repair, maintenance, inspection, and troubleshooting of fleet vehicles and construction equipment.

Equipment Mechanic I Perform repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in the construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Employees perform work independently but refer unusual issues to supervisor.

Equipment Mechanic II Perform advanced repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment. Inspect work performed by shop mechanics and contracted vendors. Provide independent work on assignments and refer unusual issues to supervisor.

Essential Duties – Equipment Mechanic I

Analyze and interpret computerized diagnostic equipment information.

Handle and dispose of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws.

Check lighting and wiring mechanisms for proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.

Complete repair order paperwork and enter data into the fleet information management system.

Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.

Order, pick up, and deliver parts, materials, tools, and operate equipment and vehicles, including heavy equipment.

Perform acetylene and electric arc welding repairs.

Perform annual state safety inspections on vehicles, including DOT required inspections.

Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; move related items as required.

Prepare vehicles for use by checking required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.

Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional Duties – Equipment Mechanic I

Train less experienced technicians.

Repair vehicle air conditioning systems.

Troubleshoot, test and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.

Minimum Qualifications – Equipment Mechanic I

Experience: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.

Substitutions: Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology; certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Minimum Qualifications – Equipment Mechanic II

Experience: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.

Substitutions: Same as Equipment Mechanic I.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid driver's license; position requires driving a state vehicle.

Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application and obtain a Class "N" endorsement within 90 calendar days from date of employment.

Mtr Veh St Inspector licensed; if performing state safety vehicle inspections must have or obtain a State Inspector's license.

Competencies – Equipment Mechanic I

Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance.

Automatic and manual shift transmission repair.

Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.

Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.

Reading and interpreting equipment repair and parts contracts.

Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures.

Competencies – Equipment Mechanic II

Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance.

Vehicle air conditioning and heating systems.

Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures.

Automatic and manual shift transmission repair.

Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.

Methods and procedures involving storage & transport of hazardous materials.

State procurement guidelines for parts purchases and P-card use.

Troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems.

Brake repairs to include anti‑locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems.

Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment.

Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.

Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines.

Using applicable electronic test equipment.

Diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications.

Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications.

Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.

Reading and interpreting equipment repair and parts contracts.

Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.

Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Subject to noise, vibration, hazards from moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.

Subject to environmental conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation.

Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.

Required to wear protective gear – respirator, hard hat, or other device.

Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.

Climbing – ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.

Balancing – walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.

Stooping – bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.

Kneeling – bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s).

Crouching – bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine.

Crawling – moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.

Reaching – extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Standing – prolonged periods of time.

Pushing – using upper extremities to press against object with force to move in a direction.

Close Visual Acuity – work includes data/figures, computer screen, visual inspection of small defects/parts, using measurement devices, and operating machines like drill presses, power saws, and mills.

Conditions of Employment

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical.

Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis to respond to emergency situations.

Will be required to work alternate schedules during an emergency response situation such as adverse weather events.

Will be required to travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.

Required to work weekends and holidays.

Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.

Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.

Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
