Our construction equipment group seeks a full‑time resident Heavy Equipment Shop Technician.
This union position is part of Local 324 and reports to the Byron Center, MI branch.
Responsibilities A Shop Technician must perform the cleaning, maintenance, visual inspection, removal, installation, disassembly, assembly, parts reuse, reconditioning, and ordering of the correct parts.
Responsibilities also include:
Complete inspections
Implement optional accessories
General repairs
Incorporate Alta’s Guiding Principles into daily activities
Perform other duties as assigned
Maintain consistent, regular attendance and be ready for work at the designated start time
Qualifications
Four years of heavy equipment or over‑the‑road (OTR) repair experience
Minimum of two years of power systems repair experience
Volvo Penta engine experience preferred
Prior mechanic repair experience in forklift, heavy equipment, diesel, automotive, or military, guard or reserve with MOS or NEC codes (63B, 63H, 63S, 63W, 63Y, 91B, 91H, 91L, 91M, or CM)
Strong knowledge of power train and generation systems
Excellent mechanical aptitude and basic math skills
Good written and verbal communication and time‑management skills
Ability to work after hours as needed and maintain a clean driving record with a valid driver’s license
Possesses own tools
Computer proficiency (Microsoft Outlook, Volvo VCADS)
Positive attitude and high energy
Physical Demands / Work Environment
Stand, walk, use hands, reach; talk/hear; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl regularly
Lift 25 pounds regularly; 26–50 pounds frequently; 51–100+ pounds occasionally
Work near moving mechanical parts; exposed to fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions; in wet or humid conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration
