HII Platform Modernization (PM) works on submarine alterations and installations for fleet modernization. The selected Pipefitter will support PM, working closely with ships and shore-based facilities on active class surface ships, submarines, and contract projects. Weekend and overtime hours may be required as contract awards and support needs arise.
Selected candidate will travel to shipyards and military bases located around the country and abroad when not assigned to a local task. Per Diem is provided based on location when on travel. Travel and lodging expenses are covered by the company.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement and performance consistent with company values.
Support trades team by working on active class vessels to assist with alterations and installations for fleet modernization.
Perform all work in accordance with established quality and safety procedures.
Perform a variety of simple and complicated tasks, both routine and non-routine, including those outside of specialty, related to shipboard maintenance to meet standards on various contracts at company, customer and/or field locations.
Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, or work orders.
Lay out and mark points and lines on pipe, tubing and parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe or templates.
Cut, fit, assemble, bend, and position pipe, tubing and support structures to be brazed or welded into jigs, holding fixtures, and existing structure using hand and powered tools.
Apply comprehensive understanding of production and processes, specialty trades functions and tools to provide technical support, install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify shipboard systems, integrated systems and related equipment at company, customer and/or field locations.
Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time.
Participate in special projects as required.
Develop and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.
Provide guidance and work leadership to less-experienced welders. May serve as a group leader.
Minimum Qualifications
Must demonstrate silver brazing ability and qualify within the first three weeks from start date for continued employment.
High School education or Trade School or equivalent, and 4 years of related experience. Prefer technical/professional certifications.
Medical clearance to wear a half-face respirator.
Knowledge and experience with standard pipe fitting procedures, bending processes for tubing and pipe, testing installed piping systems and Class P-3a and P-3b silver brazing processes in accordance with NAVSEA Tech Pub. 7000 and NAVSEA Standard Item 009-12.
Strong knowledge of reading and interpreting drawings, blueprints, weldments, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts and/or work orders.
Ability to work from blueprints, weldments, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts and/or work orders as well as written and verbal instruction.
Work outside trade specific requirements as team projects require.
Knowledge of quality control steps and procedures. Must enforce safety procedures.
Effective communication and team environment experience.
Obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment.
Obtain base access within 60 days of start date and maintain throughout employment.
Travel between 50% - 75% when not assigned to local tasking.
Provide hand tools and trade specific PPE per trades designation.
Preferred Requirements
Current or prior silver brazing qualification certificates Grade III, IV and/or V.
Current or prior welding certificates applicable with MIL-STD-248.
Graduated or completed a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program.
Current Shipyard Competent Person Certification.
Current OSHA 10 Maritime Certificate.
Physical Requirements Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes (no less than 30 lbs). Work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. Wear a respirator if required. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
