Our team of state‑certified police officers, security officers, and civilian employees are dedicated professionals who strive to create and maintain an inclusive sense of belonging across campus.
The Public Safety Telecommunicator plays a critical role in advancing our department’s mission by serving as the central communication hub during both routine and emergency situations. This position is responsible for receiving, assessing, and relaying vital information from students, faculty, staff, the general public, University Police officers, and other law‑enforcement agencies. By ensuring accurate and timely communication, the Telecommunicator directly supports the safety and well‑being of the University community.
The Public Safety Telecommunicator is the first line of defense in maintaining campus safety. By ensuring that critical information flows seamlessly between the public, University Police, and emergency responders, this position safeguards lives, protects property, and upholds the University’s commitment to a secure learning environment.
Essential Job Functions
Emergency Response Coordination:
Receive and process calls related to criminal activity, traffic accidents, medical emergencies, illnesses, utility/security issues, ensuring rapid and appropriate response.
Information Relay:
Direct information to University Police officers, medical units, law enforcement partners, and on‑call University personnel, guiding them to the appropriate destination.
Technology Operations:
Operate and monitor critical systems including CAD (Computer‑Aided Dispatch), radio consoles, University computer programs, two‑way radios, the Division of Information (DCI) console, camera surveillance systems, fire alarms, and other emergency alert systems.
Communication Management:
Handle multi‑line telephone systems, ensuring clear and professional communication with all stakeholders.
Administrative Support:
Serve as receptionist during certain shifts and perform clerical duties as needed to support departmental operations on the 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. shift.
Adaptability:
Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the evolving needs of the department.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to communicate concisely and distinctly.
Ability to efficiently receive and transmit messages while working under pressure.
Ability to operate a CAD system, radio console, University computer programs, two‑way radios, the Division of Criminal Information (DCI) console, monitor Camera System, Fire and numerous other alarms and operate a multi‑line telephone.
Preferred Qualifications
Hold a Division of Criminal Information (DCI) Terminal Certification.
Working knowledge of Banner.
Two years of experience as a police telecommunicator.
Working knowledge of operating a two‑way radio, Camera System, TDD phone, and other alarm systems.
Possess a working knowledge of the numeric codes and 10 signals.
Required Functional Competencies Decision Making
Ability to analyze messages and information to determine priorities; recognize critical incidents; coordinate response; initiate action based on acquired information and knowledge of operating procedures. Ability to make consistently sound and accurate dispatch decisions.
Communication – Verbal
Ability to comprehend callers and quickly ascertain the nature of call; obtain and extract relevant information; interpret and analyze messages from callers; apply judgment in responding to callers; speak clearly and distinctly; use language and tone to calm distressed callers and provide aid via phone until help arrives; transmit radio messages quickly and concisely; direct emergency personnel to the scene and convey relevant information to responders; interact with co‑workers, supervisors, law enforcement, emergency response personnel, university officials, media, and the general public to relay information and coordinate activities.
Technical Knowledge
Understand and follow FCC rules and regulations applicable to work; apply considerable knowledge of departmental policies and procedures related to answering, response, and dispatch of calls; work independently while reporting to supervisor regularly; proficiency in using telecommunications and information technology; display organizational awareness and understanding of general operations and procedures of applicable state and local public safety organizations; maintain certifications and complete required in‑service training; obtain Intermediate Telecommunicator certification as required; keep abreast of developments in telecommunications practices.

Non‑Faculty Staff / Non‑Faculty Appointment Type: 1
Work Schedule: Rotating twelve‑hour shifts—7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. (four days on, four days off).
Number of Hours Per Week: 40

Salary Grade Equivalency: GN05
Pay Range: $39,554 – $41,637 (anticipated hiring range). Pay commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity and market considerations.
