University Police - 430500 Primary Purpose of Position: The Appalachian State University Police Department plays a vital role in supporting the University’s academic mission by fostering a safe and welcoming environment. The Public Safety Telecommunicator serves as the central communication hub during routine and emergency situations, receiving, assessing, and relaying vital information to all stakeholders. Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Requires certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment. Position may require Basic Telecommunicator Certification in accordance with the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Ability to create and maintain collegial working relationships with customers and co‑workers, contribute to a positive and welcoming work environment, and serve as a productive team member is expected. Essential Job Functions

Emergency Response Coordination: Receive and process calls related to criminal activity, traffic accidents, medical emergencies, illnesses, utility/security issues, ensuring rapid and appropriate response. Information Relay: Direct information to University Police officers, medical units, law enforcement partners, and on‑call University personnel. Technology Operations: Operate and monitor critical systems including CAD, radio consoles, University computer programs, two‑way radios, the DCI console, camera surveillance systems, fire alarms, and other emergency alert systems. Communication Management: Handle multi‑line telephone systems, ensuring clear and professional communication with all stakeholders. Administrative Support: Serve as receptionist during certain shifts and perform clerical duties as needed to support departmental operations on the 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. shift. Adaptability: Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the evolving needs of the department. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required

Communicate concisely and distinctly. Receive and transmit messages efficiently while working under pressure. Operate a CAD system, radio console, University computer programs, two‑way radios, and DCI console; monitor camera systems and fire alarms; use a multi‑line telephone. Preferred Qualifications

Hold a Division of Criminal Information (DCI) Terminal Certification. Working knowledge of Banner. Two years of experience as a police telecommunicator. Working knowledge of operating a two‑way radio, camera system, TDD phone, and other alarm systems. Possess a working knowledge of numeric codes and 10 signals. Functional Competencies

Decision Making: Ability to analyze messages and information to determine priorities; recognize critical incidents; coordinate response and initiate action based on acquired information. Communication – Verbal: Comprehend callers, extract relevant information, respond verbally and via radio; interact with co‑workers, supervisors, law enforcement, emergency response personnel, university officials, media and the general public. Technical Knowledge: Understand and apply FCC rules, departmental policies, and procedures; proficiency in telecommunications and information technology; maintain certifications; keep abreast of telecommunications developments. Type of Position

Permanent Full‑Time. Work schedule: rotating twelve‑hour shifts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. (four days on, four days off). 40 hours per week, twelve months per year. Salary

Anticipated hiring range: $39,554–41,637. Pay will be commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity, and market considerations. Compensation Statement
