Under general direction of Water/Sewer Superintendent and the General Foreman, perform required water meter readings to record residential, commercial, and other water usage and conduct investigations of water usage and abnormalities and perform related duties for the Water/sewer Division within the Department of Public Works; perform all other related duties following established methods and procedures.

According to instructions, routes and/or requests for readings, observe and record residential, commercial, industrial, and other water usage.

Note and investigate suspected abnormal water consumption. Notify supervisors of situations requiring further attention or investigation.

Inspect and follow-up on stopped, vandalized, damaged, inoperative, or malfunctioning water meters.

Conduct special, final, and other water meter readings and meter re-readings. As required, contact users to make appointments for meter readings.

Inspect, Install, Wire, program all Town owned Water Meters, including Meter and/or Transmitter change outs.

Prepare all paperwork associated with new meters and accounts and change outs.

Inspect for cross-connections.

Inspect for approved Irrigation Meter configuration and plumbing.

Inspect all secondary meter plumbing to ensure plumbing is in accordance with approved installation.

Install, remove, replace, test water meters; and determine actual estimates in absence of actual readings.

Use a handheld or vehicle mounted radio/receiver remote meter reader and upload and download data on a daily/monthly basis.

Respond to customer inquiries from the public and others related to requests, complaints, incorrect readings, billings, and inoperative meters. Supply answers within scope of authority and refer unresolved matters to supervisor.

Always use care while operating motor vehicles, to avoid accidents and to conform to the rules of the road.

Required to assist in water/sewer operations and other Department of Public Works functions as needed.

Collect water samples as requested.

Schedule inspection and operating procedures in the cleaning, servicing and repair of sanitary sewers.

Respond to emergency situations involving water main and service breaks, sanitary and house connectionblockages and breaks, flooding, severe storms, snow and ice control.

Other Duties

Maintain established quality and quantity standards. Follow prescribed safety precautions, established department and Town policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Detect and report improper operations, faulty equipment, defective materials, and unusual conditions. Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean, orderly, operational, and safe condition.

Maintain daily records of work performed.

Perform related duties as required.

Inspect, wire, program all non-Town owned meters.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Basic mechanical ability to perform routine maintenance and repair duties to water meters.

Ability to maintain harmonious relations with the public.

Ability to work from heights, in enclosed areas and trenches, and in otherwise difficult positions.

Basic knowledge and computer skills.

Ability to operate computer-based water metering reading equipment.

Skill in the operation of motor vehicles.

Knowledge of basic arithmetic to make required calculations.

Basic knowledge of water meter and water system operations.

Education and Experience Duties require high school diploma; knowledge of motor vehicle operation and related safety procedures; basic knowledge of record keeping, billing procedures and other similar activities; up to one-year related experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license, a valid CDL Class B license, a class 2B Hoisting license and the ability to obtain a full D2 Water Operators license within 12 months of start date. \ Supervisory Responsibility None.

Physical Elements

Frequent and extended periods of work performed outdoors, subject to all weather conditions and extremes.

Duties require continuous walking, standing, and climbing.

Duties involve regular periods of strenuous physical exertion, requiring ability to lift, carry and position objects using proper body mechanics and techniques.

Exercise caution when operating motor vehicle.

FLSA Status Non-exempt

Grade W-4 with CDL and Hoisting License

W-5 with CDL, Hoisting and D2 Water Operator License
