Location: North Jackson, OH. The position requires up to 60% field travel (primarily at closed landfills) and 40% office work, with assignments across multiple facilities in Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.

Overview The Environmental Legacy team supervises daily closed landfill operations and provides environmental compliance oversight for all closed landfills and remedial sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

Supervise site staff, contractors and/or consultants performing operations and maintenance work at assigned sites to ensure the quality and timeliness of the work.

Conduct oversight and ensure smooth operations, including routine maintenance, monitoring, and construction activities, while monitoring permitting and compliance issues.

Minimize operational costs while maximizing productivity and maintaining safety and environmental compliance.

Maintain a solid working knowledge of all site‑specific system operation and maintenance requirements, including landfill gas management systems, leachate management systems, water treatment systems, landfill cover systems, surface water management systems, and environmental monitoring networks.

Comply with and ensure adherence to WM’s Mission to Zero standards and regulatory requirements to encourage safe and efficient operations.

Assist in the budget process, as required, and adhere to those budgets at assigned sites.

Ensure the cleanliness and maintenance of the physical property of the landfill through inspections and preventive maintenance programs with supervisors/employees.

Prepare or update and submit required reports in a timely manner.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Provide indirect supervision of 4-6 contract employees.

Manage supervisory employees and exercise supervisory responsibilities across assigned sites.

Qualifications A. Education and Experience

College degree in a STEM‑related field preferred but not required. High School Diploma or G.E.D. (accredited) acceptable.

Four (4) years of relevant work experience.

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

Hold OSHA 19.10.120 Hazwoper and general first‑aid training certifications, or attain them within six months of employment.

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

Monitoring or testing equipment operation; knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations; supervisory experience; and computer‑based word processing, data management, and information presentation skills.

Written and verbal communication skills, computer skills (e.g., MS Office and Power BI familiarity), and ability to learn other job‑related technical software, including “App”‑based technologies to facilitate digital inspections, reporting, and data/analytics.

Some knowledge of programmable logic controllers, SCADA, and/or automation and control systems is beneficial.

Work Environment

Requires motor coordination with finger dexterity (e.g., keyboarding, machine operation) as part of the workday.

Requires physical effort in handling objects less than 30 pounds occasionally.

Exposures to physical occupational risks such as cuts, burns, or toxic chemicals as part of the workday.

Exposures to physical environmental elements such as dirt, odors, noise, and weather extremes as part of the workday.
