Job Goal The Paraprofessional 1 role supports the instructional program within assigned classrooms, assisting the Lead Teacher in supervising, caring for, and instructing special needs students in both regular and self‑contained classrooms.
Essential Functions
Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support students in various school environments, including content area subjects.
Administers tests, homework, makeup work, and other assessments to assist lead teachers.
Supports medically fragile or physically disabled students with personal hygiene.
Communicates with instructional staff, support personnel, and parents to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
Implements behavioral plans under teacher supervision for students with behavior disorders or special conditions.
Follows lesson plans created by general and special education teachers for assigned students.
Maintains instructional materials and ensures their availability.
Monitors students during various periods, including classrooms, assemblies, job interviews, and field trips, to maintain a safe environment.
Provides instruction under teacher supervision in individual and group activities to reinforce objectives and implement IEP plans.
Attends meetings and in‑service presentations on first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, etc.
May administer immediate first aid and medical assistance as directed by a healthcare professional.
Participates in daily and long‑range lesson and classroom activity planning.
Works with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning introduced by the teacher.
Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial tasks assigned by the teacher.
Performs other related classroom duties, such as bus arrival and departure, toileting, and meal assistance.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Completed 48 hours of education at an institution of higher education OR
Associate’s degree (or higher) OR
Passed a state‑approved assessment (WorkKeys, ParaPro, or Para Educator); candidates may receive a credential assessment test if recommended for hire.
Willingness to assist the teacher in instructional activities.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience as a teacher’s aide.
Academic preparation in education.
Communication / Organization Maintains communication with school personnel and parents/guardians to support student needs. Utilizes existing technology effectively in performing duties and performs other related work as required.
Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and handle situations with limited standardization. Interprets written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled instructions.
Language Skills Ability to read, analyze, and write professional documents, reports, and protocols. Effectively presents information and responds to inquiries from administrators, staff, parents, students, and the public.
Physical Demands Employees are required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear regularly. Vision abilities include close, distance, and depth perception. Reasonable accommodations are available for disabilities.
Work Environment The environment includes loud noise levels typical of school settings. Employees are directly responsible for student safety, work output, and well‑being.
Other Skills and Abilities Applies current research and theory to instructional programs. Plans and implements lessons aligned with district objectives and student needs. Establishes effective relationships with students, peers, parents, and community. Communicates clearly in written and oral formats.
