Transmission Line Section Manager – Role Overview
The Transmission Line Section Manager has broad technical knowledge and experience with the design and construction of high‑voltage Transmission Line projects up to 500kV. Leveraging that knowledge, they work closely with a project manager (PM) to manage and execute the engineering and design components of projects, ensuring technical excellence and client satisfaction.
Responsibilities
Develop a partnership with the PM, where the PM is responsible for scope, schedule, budget, and client management, and the Engineer Manager (EM) is responsible for technical execution.
Develop and implement a project execution plan for the technical aspects of projects.
Assign project tasks and provide technical guidance to project team members.
Participate in Client Development Planning and Execution; grow the Transmission practice through business development and strengthen client relationships.
Support the technical aspects of scope, schedule, and budget – including proposal development, work‑breakdown‑structure development and implementation, progress assessment, risk assessment/mitigation, change management, and schedule management.
Coordinate and/or perform quality checks and reviews for all project deliverables per the HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements, processes, and procedures; deliver world‑class quality to the client.
Work independently and may direct, mentor, train, and supervise one or more Project Engineers, EITs, or CADD/Designers.
Lead multiple projects concurrently, utilizing teams in different locations.
Collaborate with senior engineers and technical leaders to identify and develop specific technical expertise; attend training and seminars focused on advanced concepts related to the discipline.
Create technical papers and/or presentations that showcase HDR’s technical capabilities at industry conferences or other events.
Participate in project reviews as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
BS degree in Engineering
PE license
10+ years of technical transmission line experience up to 500kV, including conceptual knowledge of routing, environmental permitting, right‑of‑way acquisition, PLS‑CADD modeling, steel and wood structure design, foundation design, material procurement, specifications, and construction support
Experience in distribution line design and/or steel lattice tower modeling and design is a plus
Strong track record of growing a Transmission practice and developing client relationships
Track record of working cooperatively with diverse teams, regional departments, technical managers, and project staff
Experience with industry standard design software
Proficient with Microsoft Office and conferencing platforms (Zoom, WebEx, Teams, etc.)
Self‑starter with strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong conceptual, organizational, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team
Previous consulting firm experience desired
