Shipping Manager.
Job Summary The
Shipping Manager
is responsible for leading the Shipping Team, comprising of Customs Brokers, Customs Entry Specialists and Import/Export Coordinators. The Shipping team processes and manages import and export shipments and all activities for US Customs clearances. The position facilitates close collaboration across JFK, the US, and abroad, and drives proper interaction with US CBP, regulatory agencies, customs brokers, vendors, customer service, and at times directly with the customer. The manager oversees documentation related to importing and exporting shipments, ensuring compliance with law, and serves as the primary leader of the team, overseeing development, production and service level.
Key Responsibilities
Develop brokerage business, build and manage efficient Customs Brokerage team to handle all import entries.
Develop subordinate staff and implement all internal processes.
Design effective customer solutions leveraging Customs privileges or improving current methods for BGS USA.
Ensure compliance with customs laws and regulations for BGS USA.
Prepare standard operating procedures covering all brokerage, import and export activities of BGS USA.
Prepare and process import/export documents and other forms on behalf of clients according to customs regulations, laws and procedures.
Build and maintain awareness of customs compliance requirements among BGS USA internal team and customers through effective communication and training programs.
Sign import/export documents on behalf of client, using power of attorney.
Provide guidance to clients on export and import restrictions, tariff systems, letters of credit, insurance requirements and other custom-related matters; quote duty and tax rates on commodities for clients.
Prepare entry papers from shipper's invoices in accordance with U.S. Customs Service regulations, and regulations of other federal agencies bearing on importation of goods, such as Environmental Protection Agency and Food And Drug Administration.
Review rates, trace product movement, file entries with Customs; provide clarification and valuation of merchandise.
Process post-entry work including ruling requests, CF 28's, refunds, protests, and drawbacks.
Manage Foreign Trade Zone and ensure the Company remains compliant.
Stay up-to-date on all customs changes.
Provide direction and structure for the Import/Export department to help generate a higher ROI and optimal workflow utilization, including training initiatives, establishing key metrics, driving and monitoring productivity and improving business process.
Develop and maintain key airline relationships.
Continuously negotiate best air freight rates.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of 10 years of Customs Brokerage / freight forwarding / logistics experience.
Minimum of 5 years experience managing a Brokerage / Shipping department or equivalent.
Must be a US Licensed Customs Broker.
Expert experience in regulatory compliance related to import/export transportation, primarily airfreight (IATA), trucking, Customs and other Regulatory Agencies.
Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated proficiency/experience working with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in the freight or security transportation business.
Experience providing efficient and accurate customer services for import/export customers.
Expert knowledge of logistical operations, products, services, policies, and procedures, in addition to a familiarity of the customers and the industries serviced.
Track record of driving collaboration and maintaining open communications with both internal teams and external/internal customers.
Experience troubleshooting unexpected issues.
BS or BA degree in business or related field.
