Overall Job Summary
The Manager in Training is responsible for learning the duties of the Store Manager position and developing all skills required for a Store Manager role. Primary responsibilities include driving outstanding sales results through effective sales techniques, building a strong team, cultivating customer loyalty through world‑class customer service, and leading the execution of company standards. This position promotes a safe and productive work environment for all Team Members, customers, and vendors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (min 5%)
Uphold and promote a safe and productive work environment by following and enforcing all policies and procedures of Petsense by Tractor Supply.
Observe and learn how to build the store team through hiring/staffing decisions, Team Member retention, schedule and payroll management, training and development, succession planning, and performance reviews and counseling.
Take the initiative to support selling initiatives (TEAM):

Engage with the customer and/or pet
Advise products or services
Make it Memorable
Drive sales and profit through top‑line sales, merchandising initiatives, expense control, P&L management, and protecting company assets while reducing shrink.
Grow the grooming business and ensure pets are cared for and safe at all times.
Generate brand awareness through local marketing events such as Pet Adoption and community fairs.
Lead the execution of Petsense standards through store presentation, inventory management, freight movement, pricing/promotional activities, loss prevention, audit compliance, and daily task delegation.
Perform tasks as required day‑to‑day, including:
Handle and resolve customer complaints to ensure a positive shopping experience.
Perform opening and closing procedures.
Transport and deposit cash to the bank or coordinate with armored car service.
Operate cash registers/computers and supervise cash handling procedures.
Be comfortable working with small animals (e.g., snakes, spiders, crickets, hamsters, amphibians) and uphold safety policies.
Ensure daily reconciliation of cash drawers and vaults.
Maintain regular and predictable attendance; work scheduled shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and varying hours as required.
Paperwork: Train on daily and weekly processing of invoices, schedules, orders, returns, POs, and other documents; participate in sales forecasting, payroll analysis, and budget review; document team member evaluations and corrective actions.
Inventory: Train on periodic price changes.
Budgeting/auditing: Be responsible for budgeting, sales forecasting, and auditing store processes.
Live Animals: Care for animals during services, adoption, or sale; understand related policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
Minimum two years of retail leadership experience (experience with P&L, scheduling, shrink control, payroll, staffing, hiring, supervising, and counseling preferred).
Must be 18 years of age or older and possess a valid driver’s license.
High School diploma or equivalent required. Ability to read, write, and count accurately is mandatory.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities
Strong communication with customers and Team Members.
Excellent reading, writing, and numerical skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and ethical conflict resolution.
Time and stress management.
Basic computer skills and math aptitude.
Capability to perform core Team Member responsibilities.
Working Conditions
Indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise, concrete or asphalt surfaces, adequate lighting, and temperature control.
Shifts typically 4–8+ hours, varying by location.
Promote a safe and productive work environment for all stakeholders.
Travel may be required for training, meetings, or assistance at other locations.
Physical Requirements
Non‑sedentary work; visible and accessible throughout the store.
Stamina and mobility to move merchandise up to 50 lb, operate equipment (e.g., dolly, hand truck), and navigate store and outdoor areas.
Ability to stand, kneel, twist, crouch, squat, bend, stoop, and climb ladders.
Operate and use all store equipment efficiently and safely; forklift and baler not required for under 18.
Accurate reading, writing, and calculation for documentation.
Strong verbal and written communication with team members and customers.
Proficiency in point‑of‑sale system and optional propane dispensing certification (under 18 exemption).
