Plant Utilities Engineer 1 (NY HELPS), New York State Psychiatric Institute $56,506.00 – $68,630.00 annually.

Duties Description Are you interested in starting a career with New York State? Do you have commercial/industrial operation and maintenance experience with HVAC or boiler equipment? New York State Psychiatric Institute is recruiting for a Plant Utilities Engineer 1 for their physical plant operations. Candidates from outside or within State Service can apply.

Key Responsibilities

Operate, maintain, and repair HVAC and mechanical equipment inside and outside the physical plant equipment.

Clean, inspect, and maintain boilers.

Respond to mechanical, electrical, or plumbing calls and troubleshoot necessary repairs.

Conduct boiler, HVAC, and water systems testing, analyze results, and adjust chemicals as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate of a heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, or refrigeration apprenticeship program from the U.S. Air Force.

Enlisted machinery technician (MK) with the U.S. Coast Guard or possession of a certificate as a Marine Engineer issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army.

Enlisted gas turbine systems technician, submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator, reactor control, utilities man, machinist mate, or engineman with the U.S. Navy.

Merchant Mariner’s Document (MMD) and qualified member of the engine department (QMED) as an oiler, fireman/water tender, refrigerating engineer, or engineman with the U.S. Merchant Marine.

Completion of a New York State Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program for stationary engineers, plant maintenance (plumber/steamfitter), HVAC mechanic, or plant maintenance (refrigeration/AC).

Possession of a High‑Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License.

Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Marine Engineering.

4 years of full‑time hands‑on experience in the maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, institutional facilities, digital energy platforms, and building analytics, and/or performing diagnosis and repair of HVAC systems, boilers, or auxiliary equipment.

4 years of full‑time hands‑on experience in a residential setting performing diagnosis, operation, maintenance, repair of HVAC systems, boilers, or auxiliary equipment.

Associate’s degree in HVAC and 2 years of full‑time hands‑on experience in the maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, institutional facilities, digital energy platforms, and building analytics, and/or performing diagnosis and repair of HVAC systems, boilers, or auxiliary equipment; or 2 years of full‑time hands‑on experience in a residential setting performing diagnosis, operation, maintenance, repair of HVAC systems, boilers, or auxiliary equipment.

Completion of an HVAC certificate or diploma from a BOCES program (900 hours) or completion of an approved certificate in HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, boiler operations and maintenance, or plumbing from an accredited technical school or technology college and 2 years of full‑time hands‑on experience in the maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, institutional facilities, digital energy platforms, and building analytics, and/or performing diagnosis and repair of HVAC systems, boilers, or auxiliary equipment; or 2 years of full‑time hands‑on experience in a residential setting performing diagnosis, operation, maintenance, repair of HVAC systems, boilers, or auxiliary equipment.
