Overview Season Dates: April 13, 2026 – June 3, 2026 Salary Level: $16.66/hour Position is not benefit eligible

Descriptions & Responsibilities This position instructs middle school students in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary to achieve individual and team success. The employee must understand and abide by all building, Tacoma School District and Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) policies, regulations, procedures and guidelines.

Essential Job Functions

Supervise student athletes to promote effective learning through participation in athletic activities.

Plan, develop and implement an effective program, including behavioral objectives for the season, discipline, safety precautions and parent communication.

Organize practice sessions for 7th and 8th grade teams four days a week and 6th grade teams two days a week, immediately after school, emphasizing skills, sportsmanship and team potential.

Coordinate facility use, budgeting, equipment purchase and injury procedures; maintain injury records with the building athletic director.

Inform students and parents of eligibility rules, post rules and maintain equipment issuance records, ensuring return, cleaning and weekly safety checks.

Make written recommendations on program, facilities and transportation; assist the building athletic director and district athletic director in achieving the school’s athletic objectives.

Other Job Duties

Attend all district and building athletic meetings as called.

Update knowledge by attending clinics, workshops and staying current on rule changes adopted by WIAA and Tacoma School District.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Conditions Work with students in outdoor playing fields, indoor and outdoor courts, gymnasium, swimming pool or other sports facility; physical ability to lift equipment and demonstrate sports skills when necessary; may be exposed to infectious diseases and inclement weather.

Minimum Qualifications Graduation from high school or equivalent and a minimum of two years of experience as an assistant coach; must be at least 21 years of age (WIAA Regulation) or any combination of experience and training that meets federal and state requirements.

Education & Experience Graduation from high school or equivalent. Minimum of two years experience as an assistant coach. Must be at least 21 years old.

Licenses / Special Requirements First Aid Certificate and CPR card are required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of building, Tacoma School District, and WIAA policies, regulations, procedures and guidelines.

Knowledge of effective coaching practices/techniques for wrestling.

Ability to comply with WIAA coaching standards.

Ability to motivate students.

Ability to exercise fairness in dealing with student athletes.

Ability to conduct oneself ethically and exemplarily at all times.

Ability to maintain poise and composure during practice and games.

Ability to relate to students of differing athletic abilities.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with a variety of people in a multicultural, diverse socio‑economic setting.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate athletic activities.

Ability to set up and maintain accurate records and files.
