Construction Materials Tester Department Information This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

Description of the Position This position, located in Lamar, supports engineers in materials testing, construction inspection, and field data collection. You'll get certified to perform industry standard testing procedures and use specialized equipment to take measurements, analyze samples, and record results. The position ensures contractors' work complies with approved plans, specifications, and construction requirements. This position is ideal for candidates with strong attention to detail and an interest in engineering and quality control.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the sampling and field testing of materials incorporated on assigned, multiple construction projects. Collect test materials, run appropriate tests, and conduct analyses. Report any abnormal results to the project engineer.

Schedule and perform the materials sampling and testing at facilities located in the field to ensure that materials placed on construction projects are in conformance with contract specifications and industry standards.

Acquire and maintain certifications for asphalt, concrete, and soils testing including: LabCAT, ACI (Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, Concrete Strength Testing Technician), WAQTC materials testing, and Radiological Safety & Nuclear Gauge Operation.

Assist with monitoring consultants who perform the necessary testing for various projects.

Conduct inspection of construction methods, procedures, and materials utilized to assure that the final construction product meets all specifications and standards and is in conformance with engineering details.

Provide basic interpretation of plans and specifications for the contractor and refer contractor to project engineer for any corrective actions that need to be taken.

Measure, calculate, and document quantities of work performed by the contractor using measuring devices, calculators, and computers.

Provide office engineering support by checking project pay items documentation, posting quantities in computer database, checking contractor payrolls, recording contractor manpower and equipment, and monitoring daily traffic control.

Use established procedures to compile information acquired through site surveys and research efforts. This assists the creation of a complete set of plans for a highway construction project.

Use computer aided drafting programs, earthwork programs, spreadsheets, databases, and other specialized design programs to organize the data for a construction project into a useful set of project plans.

Work Environment

Your schedule will primarily be 7:00 am – 4:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday

Approximately 85% spent in the field, 15% spent in the office

Workdays/hours may change depending on the project

Night, holiday, and weekend work may be required during construction

Travel in and around the state to project sites, training, meeting and conferences is expected

Required to operate CDOT vehicles

Required to use appropriate personal protective equipment as needed

Work in close proximity to heavy traffic

Must be willing and be physically able to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold), variable weather conditions, and at varying elevations up to 12,000 feet

Use, Handling, or Exposure to hazardous materials – Radioactivity, Nuclear Testing Gauge

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Two (2) years of experience in any combination of the following:

working in building or skilled trades (e.g. welder, utilities, electrician, carpenter)

performing quality control and/or quality assurance duties

assisting in the design of construction plans

monitoring construction projects

conducting materials testing

inspecting projects.

Substitutions

Additional appropriate education in engineering, construction management, mathematics, or other relevant coursework will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. (Transcripts and / or official NACES Reports are required)

A current valid driver’s license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.

Within 2 years of hire, LabCAT, ACI (Concrete Field-Testing Technician Grade I, Concrete Strength Testing Technician), WAQTC materials testing, and Radiological Safety & Nuclear Gauge Operation certifications are required and to be maintained.

Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;

Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;

Certification in ACI A and B, WAQTC and CAPA;

Working knowledge of engineering design standards;

Experience inspecting construction projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications;

Working knowledge of materials testing processes, principles, and best practices;

Experience testing or assisting with the testing of asphalt, concrete, soil, and aggregates;

Knowledge of and experience in reading and interpreting engineering design and construction project plans;

Knowledge and experience with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD);

Experience on transportation related projects;

Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills;

Strong sense of teamwork and focus on being an integral and contributing teammate
