Job Responsibilities Performs and supervises staff in administrative functions regarding engineering and related correspondence. Ensures that final plans and monthly pay estimates are completed and submitted under the approved SCDOT guidelines. Prepares cost estimates for new projects. Ensures that inspectors maintain up-to-date daily work reports, and project checklist. Supervises engineering and inspection duties performed by subordinate(s) on roadway and bridge projects in Dillon County and Marlboro County. Monitors all construction activities on projects assigned to the unit to ensure that all specifications, plans, and contracts are adhered to. Ensures that all required samples are obtained and submitted for testing. Resolves problems as they arise regarding roadway and bridge construction. Supervises and manages the Department's resources on road construction projects, resurfacing contracts, and bridge construction assigned to the Dillon County and Marlboro County Construction Unit. Monitors contractor's compliance with all federal and state regulations regarding control of erosion and storm water pollution. Ensures compliance with the engineering design and plans are adhered to, and provides assistance to contractors in the preparation of erosion control and pollution prevention plans. Ensures that inspections are performed in accordance with SCDOT guidelines. Ensures daytime and nighttime traffic control inspections are performed in accordance with SCDOT Guidelines. Assists the general public with complaints and concerns regarding road and bridge construction projects. Reviews engineering plans with property owners to determine the effect projects have on their property, conflicts, and possible solutions. Evaluates and prepares performance appraisals on subordinates. Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours and/or 12 hour shifts.

Minimum Requirements A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and one (1) year of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

Physical Demands & Work Conditions The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise. May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
