Responsibilities

Assists the Resident Bridge Construction Engineer with planning, organizing and assigning personnel to adequately perform duties in engineering and inspection.

Coordinates survey operations to ensure accurate and prompt layout of construction projects.

Makes field inspections to ensure proper construction procedures and compliance with the plans and specifications.

Monitors the performance of engineering personnel to reveal competence and ability.

Trains personnel in the skills and techniques associated with their duties.

Reviews the status of projects and makes beneficial changes.

Assists in the investigation and solution of major engineering problems on bridge construction projects.

Supervises inspectors in all phases of highway and bridge construction projects.

Conducts sampling and field tests on all projects.

Ensures compliance with plans and specifications for both state and federal aid projects.

Serves as project inspector when workload requires.

Provides thorough knowledge of all aspects of each project to take control in case of unexpected absence of engineering personnel.

Assists with the supervision of preparing and maintaining complete and accurate engineering data and reports.

Develops methods and procedures to improve quality, accuracy, and efficiency (time) preparing records and reports.

Trains engineering personnel in these duties.

Prepares daily diaries, monthly construction estimates, change orders, and final plans on construction projects.

Reviews similar tasks performed by subordinates.

Completes annual reviews for all subordinates, enters payroll, and mileage.

Assists with emergencies and hazardous weather operations, which may involve extended hours and/or 12‑hour shifts.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management.

Three (3) years of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

Physical Demands The essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. It may require travel and bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. It may require driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and encountering natural environmental hazards. The position may require working outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather or other emergencies, and may be exposed to harsh environmental conditions and noise.
