Season Dates: Feb 27–Jun 9 & Sep 13–Nov 14 (subject to change)
Key Responsibilities
Prepare wildfire suppression equipment and facilities, maintain inventory, and conduct winter storage.
Lead initial attack on wildfires and participate in prescribed burns as part of the area team.
Assist the Area Supervisor with fire‑prevention activities, directing suppression personnel and providing training.
Operate fire suppression equipment, protect the fire scene, gather investigative information, and complete reports.
Perform strenuous physical work under adverse conditions using hand and power tools.
Minimum Qualifications
Two months of wildfire response experience; OR an associate’s degree (or higher) in natural resource management with a wildland firefighting focus.
Completion of required trainings (S‑130, S‑190, I‑100, L‑180, IS‑700).
Class A driver’s license (or ability to obtain one within six months of hire).
Ability to pass a moderate fitness test (walk 2 mi with a 25‑lb pack in 30 min) within six months, then annually.
Comprehensive knowledge of wildfire suppression, equipment, state/local regulations, and safety protocols.
Strong communication skills and ability to use maps, GPS, and reporting systems.
Physical stamina and willingness to travel across Minnesota.
Preferred Qualifications
NWCG Red Card qualified Engine Boss (ENGB).
Incident Commander Type 4 (ICT4).
Tracked Vehicle Operator or Initial Attack Dozer Operator (TVOP/DOZ1).
Helicopter Crew Member (HECM).
Squad Boss (FFT1).
No‑Fall Class B (FALB).
Proficiency with DNR Forestry fire‑reporting system.
Additional Requirements
Current valid Class A license or ability to obtain one within first six months.
Successful background check (conflict of interest, criminal history, education verification, employment records, license/certification).
Pre‑employment drug screen and inclusion in the DNR random testing program.
Must meet physical requirements and work in all environmental conditions.
Legal authorization to work in the US (no visa sponsorship).
