Summary The primary purpose of this position is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. The incumbent utilizes journeyman knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. All of the duties described may not exist in every location, but that should not preclude use of this position.

Duties

Perform a variety of maintenance duties on buildings and utilities using journeyman skills in sheet metal, iron, wood manufacturing, masonry, glazing, and painting; some are on historic buildings and utilities.

Work with building and utilities to construct, alter, repair, rehabilitate, or modify existing historic items such as windows, doors, posts, beams, stairways, railings, interior and exterior moldings, siding, rafters, roofing, etc.

Operate trucks up to 20,000 GVW on public roads and motorboats up to 30 ft in length safely on Lake Superior in all weather conditions.

Operate and perform preventive maintenance on portable generators and portable water pumps.

Cut‑off Dates This is an open continuous announcement. Applications are collected over several months and have multiple cut‑off dates. Applications received by the initial cut‑off date are considered first.

INITIAL CUT OFF: Monday, December 29, 2025 . Applications will be considered throughout the open period; additional referral certificates will only be issued when a hiring official exhausts current certificates and/or additional vacancies need to be filled.

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Meet Selective Service registration requirements for males.

Direct Deposit: selectee must participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

Drug testing: submit to a drug test and receive a negative result prior to appointment; position subject to random testing.

Uniform: must wear a NPS uniform and comply with uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.

Minimum Age: applicants must be at least 18 years old or 16 years old and meet high‑school equivalency, vocational training, school enrollment with part‑time work, or a statement from school authorities.

Motorboat operation/instructor certification: applicant must obtain a Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC), Motorboat Operator Instructor Certification Course (MOICC), or equivalent after entrance on duty date.

Lead testing: due to occasional exposure to lead paint removal and encapsulating, employees required to undergo lead blood testing.

Respiratory fit testing: due to exposure to particles and fumes, employees required to participate in respiratory protection program and fit tests.

Government housing may be available.

Qualifications To qualify, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job‑related factors:

Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (screen out).

Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints.

Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.

Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.

Knowledge of materials.

Technical practices: theoretical, precise, artistic.

Use of measuring instruments.

Vehicle operation.

Screen outs:

Minimum Qualification: experience demonstrating ability to perform most work as a Maintenance Mechanic at the journeyman level, with two of the following trades: Carpentry, Plumbing, Painting, Masonry, Water Treatment Plant Operations, or Roofing.

Driver’s License: required to operate a motor vehicle as part of duties; valid license and driving record required.

Volunteer Experience:

Experience includes paid and unpaid work such as National Service programs and other organizations. Volunteer work is credited for qualifying experience.

Education:

No substitution of education for experience for wage grade positions.

Additional Information This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Non‑Competitive Rehire Eligibility:

Temporary seasonal employees can maintain rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of 1,040 hours. Eligibility allows re‑appointment to the same or a qualifying position. Exceeding the limit results in loss of eligibility.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands:

Heavy to moderate lifting or handling of objects up to 50 lb; often required to stand, climb ladders or scaffolding, bend, stoop, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions:

Exposed to seasonal weather (temperature range –40 to 90+ °F), dust, dirt, wind, rain, dangerous chemicals, moving equipment, electrical shocks, and biting insects.
