Summary This position is a working leader assigned responsibility for building and utility maintenance work. Incumbent performs duties as a craftsman in maintenance, preservation, and construction operations of the park including historic structures, buildings, and other park facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities The Work Leader directs employees in scheduled preventive maintenance inspections and corrective maintenance of electrical, HVAC, utility system repairs, mechanical, and plumbing within the Arch Visitor Center, Ranger Station, Grounds, Old Court House, and north and south overlooks. Responsibilities include planning, supervising, and ensuring quality maintenance across the busy season and year‑round.

Cut-off Dates This is an open continuous announcement. Applications are collected over several months with multiple cut-off dates. Applications received by the initial cutoff date will be considered first.

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

Direct Deposit: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

Driver's License: Valid driver's license required; must submit Motor Vehicle Operator's License and driving record.

Uniform: Mandatory uniform per National Park Service standards; allowance provided.

Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 18 years old or meet one of the specified educational thresholds.

Government Housing: Housing is NOT available.

Qualifications

Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).

Ability to Lead or Supervise.

Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.

Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.

Knowledge of materials.

Technical practices (theoretical precise, artistic).

Use of measuring instruments.

Screen Out Lead or supervise maintenance mechanics equivalent to the WG‑10 level. Experience demonstrates potential to lead by meeting the following four factors: 1) Ability to communicate 2) Integrity 3) Willingness to accept policy 4) Knowledge of maintenance mechanic work in at least two of the following trades (Masonry, Carpentry, Painting, Electrical, Plumbing, Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic, and Utilities Systems Repair‑Operator). If the SCREEN OUT factor is not met, no further consideration.

Volunteer Experience Experience includes paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service through National Service programs (Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. Volunteer work provides valuable training that translates to paid employment.

Physical Demands Physical effort is heavy to moderate, requiring lifting or handling objects up to 50‑100 pounds unassisted. Frequently required to stand, climb ladders, bend, stoop, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions Exposed to seasonal weather conditions (temperatures ‑40 to 90+ °F), danger of falls, dust, dirt, wind, rain, chemicals, electrical shock, and other hazards. Must wear prescribed safety equipment.
