Aerospace Component Manufacturing - Tooling Design Engineer
Location: Sylmar, CA
Salary: $90,000 to $107,000 annually
PPG is looking for a highly motivated Tooling Design Engineer to design and develop tooling solutions that sustain production, improve cycle times, and support new product introductions at our Sylmar, CA site. The primary focus is 3D CAD design in SOLIDWORKS, managing multiple designs, jigs, fixtures, molds, and other tooling elements while ensuring accurate document and data control.
Responsibilities
Create and develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, and tooling components in SOLIDWORKS, including jigs, fixtures, inspection tooling, forming molds, and related designs.
Support multiple design projects simultaneously, adapting to shifting priorities and variable workflow requirements.
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams and act as a technical resource for upstream process review, defining tooling requirements, and ensuring manufacturability.
Assist in downstream activities such as quality inspection tooling, tool validation, and production buy‑off.
Maintain accurate document control, versioning, and engineering data management for all design packages and related documentation.
Participate in design reviews, troubleshooting, and process evaluations to support continuous improvement.
Apply design principles to optimize tooling for ergonomics, efficiency, and process measurement capabilities.
Support senior engineers in mentoring technicians and implementing best practices in CAD and tooling design.
Core Requirements
2 or more years of experience in tooling, manufacturing engineering, or related technical/design roles.
Bachelor’s degree or greater in Mechanical Engineering.
Proficiency in SOLIDWORKS CAD software, including assemblies and 3D CAD modeling.
Experience designing fixtures, molds, jigs, and tooling components, preferably in hard tooling (CNC, machining, welding) and soft tooling (fiberglass, carbon fiber, resin, 3‑D printing).
