Job Summary The Assistant Chief Plant Operator position performs operations duties under the guidance of the Chief Plant Operator and makes operational decisions in the absence of the Chief Plant Operator for the City’s wastewater treatment facilities. This position performs maintenance and repair of equipment related to the City’s wastewater treatment facilities and participates in the technical treatment process for the wastewater treatment plant. The Assistant Chief Plant Operator assists with setting priorities and directing the day‑to‑day work of the City’s wastewater treatment facilities.

Examples of Duties

Perform operations duties under the guidance of the Chief Plant Operator and make operational decisions in the absence of the Chief Plant Operator for the City’s Wastewater Treatment facilities.

Assist in setting priorities and directing the day‑to‑day work of the City’s wastewater treatment facilities.

Submit accurate reports to the State Department of Environmental Conservation and ensure compliance with all State and Federal regulations in the absence of the Chief Plant Operator.

Monitor, maintain, operate, and repair equipment and facilities related to the City’s wastewater collection and treatment system.

Create and maintain accurate records of repairs, routine maintenance tasks, pump station callouts, and other significant work tasks.

Perform general indoor and external facility maintenance tasks such as cleaning, mopping, and painting.

Respond to on‑call and weekend duties on a rotating schedule after the training period.

Ensure work is performed in accordance with established safety and operational procedures and techniques, requiring independent judgment in operating equipment.

Perform duties in accordance with established procedures and techniques, requiring independent judgment and decision making.

Monitor and collect samples for State wastewater reporting. Perform basic laboratory functions.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent with coursework in chemistry, environmental science, civil engineering, biology, and/or other related fields. Three years of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid VT CDL license with Tanker Endorsement or the ability to obtain within the first six months of employment. This requirement may be waived by the Water Quality Superintendent.

VT Grade 3-DM Wastewater Operator’s License or ability to obtain within the first six months of employment.

Supplemental Information

Demonstrated ability to work independently under the administrative direction of the Water Quality Superintendent.

Demonstrated ability to understand and execute VT State discharge permits and compliance requirements.

Demonstrated ability to perform and analyze the necessary laboratory controls to ensure proper operation and documentation of the facility and all related facilities.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.

Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships with employees and the public.

Demonstrated ability to complete data entry in spreadsheets.
