The Heron Pond Canoe Specialist leads the development and safe implementation of the canoe program for oldest campers at Camp Kingfisher. The Canoe Instructor is responsible for teaching up to six interactive canoeing classes per day for rising 4th – 7th graders, leading river trips throughout the season, and fulfilling additional specialist duties at camp. All Staff at Camp Kingfisher are hired to:
Lead campers as a positive, caring role model Provide campers with fun, positive outdoor learning experiences Help campers grow and learn through challenges Essential Functions
Develop and supervise all aspects of canoe program for campers entering grades 4-7 Submit weekly curriculum Maintain high standards of safety, health, and cleanliness during canoe and other activities Create and lead fun canoe games, skill building sessions, and nature‑exploration activities Lead middle school age campers on canoeing trips on the Chattahoochee River Assist with orientation and ongoing canoeing training of camp counselors Create and lead alternative program for when ponds are closed Support program areas such as aftercare, waterfront, pool, all camp activities, and arts and crafts as directed Substitute as a counselor as needed Clean camp facilities as needed/required Attend weekly camp staff and specialist meetings Contribute to verbal/written evaluations and communication as requested Keep track of and record hours worked, requesting director’s approval for any additional hours prior to work Complete additional duties as assigned Physical Demands and Work Environment
Willingness to work outdoors during the summer season Must be able to lift and carry a canoe Valid driver’s license or state‑issued ID Skills
Experience and passion for teaching or working with children Proficiency and passion for operating canoes and similar watercraft, canoe instruction, experience preferred Ability to adhere to and enforce Camp Kingfisher’s water safety procedures Comfortable in an outdoor setting Background in environmental education, natural history, education, child care, or camps Current First Aid/CPR certification; course provided Canoe Training; course provided Seniority level
