Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective‑negotiation agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations across the state of New Jersey, including planning, construction, facilities, public safety, emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.

Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Plumber/Steamfitter I for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Under the direction of the Supervisor, Maintenance and Construction, the candidate performs a variety of maintenance repairs, installation/replacement of plumbing systems and fixtures, including supply systems, DWV, heating, and steam equipment. The role also assists in the work direction of other mechanics and trades helpers.

Duties

Operate, maintain, repair, and install pipe systems, plumbing fixtures, heating fixtures, steam fixtures, regulators, valves, and various system elements/appliances.

Respond to plumbing trouble calls and requests within the facilities using hand tools, power tools, equipment analysis, and installation testing.

Perform routine maintenance, preventive maintenance, and inspections on plumbing systems, equipment, and related systems, including ancillary equipment such as exchangers, regulators, coils, fluid/gas piping, strainers, operating valves, and medical air/gas systems.

Install, repair, and maintain water, gas, oil, waste disposal, high‑pressure steam, and high‑temperature hot water systems. Install, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on furnaces, heat exchanges, and pumping systems.

Prepare, maintain, and submit requisitions, work orders, records, and reports to the Supervisor, Maintenance and Construction.

Maintain daily lime sheets and information pertaining to work performed and time spent.

Prepare or work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accordance with plumbing standards.

Analyze situations requiring modification or repair of facility equipment/systems and recommend solutions.

Perform pipe and filling insulation and labeling.

Assist in the work direction of other mechanics, facility staff, trades helpers, and/or other skilled trades as needed.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

FLSA & Salary Grade 210 – Minimum Salary $31.31, Mid‑Range Salary $31.81, Maximum Salary $32.76.

Position Status Full‑time, 40 hour week, standard hours, daily work shift, work arrangement, union description IUOE 68, Payroll designation PeopleSoft Seniority Unit Terms of Appointment Staff – 12 month Position. Pension eligibility PERS.

Qualifications

Technical school diploma or equivalent knowledge plus five (5) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and installation of plumbing systems/equipment in an educational, industrial, or health‑care setting.

Valid driver’s license required.

Sound knowledge of blueprint and schematic reading is required, as is thorough knowledge of all applicable (local, state, and national) codes.

New Jersey Black Seal Engineer’s License preferred.

Equipment & Physical Demands

Ability to perform physical labor without restrictions, including lifting equipment exceeding 50 pounds and working on roofs, scaffolds, and ladders.

Requires work in wet or humid conditions, near mechanical moving parts, high precarious places, among fumes and airborne particles, outdoors, under vibration up to 2/3 of the time, and in extreme hot or cold conditions. May be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock, and radiation less than 1/3 of the time. Moderate noise conditions are typical. Requires near, distance, and color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
