Overview The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations across the State of New Jersey. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Plumber/Steamfitter I for IP&O.

Posting Summary Under the direction of the Supervisor, Maintenance and Construction, performs a variety of maintenance repairs, and installation/replacement of plumbing systems and fixtures, including supply systems, DWV system, plumbing, heating, and steam fixtures/equipment. Assists in the work direction of other mechanics, trades helpers, and mechanics of other skilled trades.

Responsibilities

Operates, maintains, repairs, and installs pipe systems, plumbing fixtures, heating fixtures, steam fixtures, regulators, valves, and various system elements/appliances.

Responds to plumbing trouble calls and requests within the facilities, using hand tools, power tools, analyzing equipment, and testing installations.

Performs routine and preventive maintenance and inspections on plumbing systems, equipment, and related equipment/systems.

Installs, repairs and/or maintains water, gas, oil, waste disposal, and high‑pressure steam and high‑temperature hot water systems and other plumbing equipment.

Prepares, maintains, and submits requisitions for material, work orders, required records, and reports to the Supervisor.

Maintains daily lime sheets and information on work performed and time spent.

Prepares or works from sketches, plans, and specifications in accordance with plumbing standards.

Analyzes situations requiring modification or repair of facility equipment/systems and recommends solutions.

Performs pipe and filling insulation and labeling.

Assists in the work direction of other mechanics, facility staff, trades helpers, and other skilled trades as needed.

Understands and adheres to Rutgers’ compliance standards as appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and Conflict of Interest Policy.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Technical school diploma or equivalent knowledge plus five (5) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and installation of plumbing systems/equipment in an educational, industrial, or health‑care setting.

Preferred Qualifications

New Jersey Black Seal Engineer’s License.

Certifications / Licenses

A valid Driver’s License is required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Ability to perform physical labor without restrictions, including lifting equipment in excess of 50 pounds, work on roofs, scaffolds, and ladders.

Work may require wet or humid conditions, exposure to mechanical moving parts, high or precarious places, fumes and airborne particles, outdoor weather, vibrations up to 2/3 of the time; exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme hot or cold conditions, risk of electrical shock and radiation less than 1/3 of the time.

Moderate noise levels typical.

Requires close, distance, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

FLSA: Nonexempt

Salary Range: 31,310 – 32,760 (mid range 31,810)
