Allen Control Systems
Mechanical Engineer, Staff
– Allen Control Systems
Company Overview Allen Control Systems (ACS) is a cutting‑edge defense startup founded by two ex‑Navy electrical engineers. We develop a small autonomous gun turret employing advanced computer vision and control systems to target and neutralize drones and loitering munitions. ACS values technical excellence and innovation and is backed by founders' successful exits totaling $180M.
Position Overview We are looking for a highly experienced Mechanical Designer with expertise in mechanical simulations and electromechanical integration. The ideal candidate will design for durability, reliability, and robustness according to MIL‑STD‑810, ensuring our products meet environmental, vibration, and shock requirements.
What You'll Do
Design and develop mechanical systems that meet MIL‑STD‑810 specifications.
Perform mechanical simulations (FEA, modal, vibration, thermal) to assess durability under operational stress.
Collaborate with electrical and systems engineers to integrate electromechanical components.
Lead structural integrity testing and analysis for military‑grade systems.
Develop and document design specifications, drawings, simulation reports, and testing protocols.
Conduct testing and validation to meet performance and safety standards.
Support prototype development and work with manufacturing teams for feasibility and cost‑effectiveness.
Maintain focus on product quality, safety, and reliability adhering to DFM and DFR best practices.
Contribute to cross‑functional design reviews, identifying mechanical and electromechanical risks early.
What You'll Need
Passion for designing robust mechanical systems in harsh environments.
Experience in robotics, medical robotics, autonomy, or related labs (required).
9+ years mechanical design experience, including electromechanical integration.
Bachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
R&D experience.
Hands‑on structural, vibration, thermal simulations using ANSYS, SolidWorks (preferred).
Proficient in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo).
Strong understanding of MIL‑STD‑810 requirements.
Skill in electromechanical integration (wiring harnesses, sensors, actuators).
Experience with FEA, modal, thermal analysis.
Collaboration with electrical, software, systems engineers.
Familiarity with DFM and DFR principles.
You’ll Stand Out
Direct experience with MIL‑STD‑810 vibration, temperature, and shock tests.
Knowledge of MIL‑S‑901D (naval shock testing) and MIL‑STD‑461 (EMI/EMC).
Experience with EMC considerations in mechanical design.
Rapid prototyping, additive manufacturing (3D printing).
Knowledge of fluid dynamics and heat transfer.
Shock absorption and damping system experience.
What We Offer
Competitive salary.
ACS equity package.
Health, dental, vision insurance.
Paid time off.
Equal Opportunity Employer : Allen Control Systems prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type. We provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment.
