The
Indirect Tax Manager
will lead the company’s indirect tax function with a focus on Sales & Use Tax compliance, Property Tax, and Excise Tax. This role is responsible for accurate and timely compliance, audit management, process improvement, and tax technology optimization. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise across multiple indirect tax areas, hands‑on experience with tax automation platforms (Vertex, OneSource, Avalara), and the ability to partner effectively with business teams to deliver scalable, compliant tax solutions. Key Responsibilities
Oversee preparation and filing of sales and use tax, property tax, and excise tax returns across all applicable jurisdictions. Ensure accuracy of tax calculations, payments, and reporting. Maintain indirect tax calendars and filing schedules. Review nexus footprint and monitor changes in tax regulations and requirements. Manage exemption and resale certificate collection, validation, renewal, and storage. Audit Management & Risk Mitigation
Manage indirect tax audits and respond to inquiries from tax authorities. Prepare audit data packages, reconcile supporting documentation, and resolve audit findings. Identify and mitigate potential tax liabilities or exposures. Identify refund opportunities and recovery claims related to overpayments, vendor errors, or misapplied tax. Tax Technology & Process Optimization
Lead or support implementation, configuration, and ongoing maintenance of sales and use tax automation software. Partner with IT, finance, and business operations to integrate tax engines with ERP and billing systems. Evaluate process gaps and develop scalable, automated solutions to improve compliance efficiency. Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Work closely with procurement, accounting, and operations teams to ensure proper tax treatment on purchases, invoicing, and fixed assets. Support business initiatives by advising indirect tax implications for new products, locations, or. Provide internal training on tax rules, documentation requirements, and systems. Research & Advisory
Conduct technical research, prepare position papers, and ensure compliance with state and local tax regulations. Support strategic planning around tax savings opportunities and risk management. Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or related field. 5+ years of progressive experience in indirect tax. Strong technical knowledge of sales & use tax, property tax, and excise tax. Experience preparing, reviewing, or managing multi‑state filings. Familiarity with tax automation systems (Vertex, OneSource, Avalara, etc.). Solid analytical skills with the ability to interpret tax laws and apply them to real‑world scenarios. Excellent communication and project management abilities. Preferred Qualifications
CPA or CMI (Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation). Experience implementing tax automation tools end‑to‑end. Multistate or national‑level indirect tax experience. Exposure to ERP systems such as D365, SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or Workday. Attributes for Success
