Summary:

This position is located in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, within the Visitor Resource Division (Division of Visitor and Resource Protection, Lake Mead National Recreation Area). The assistant chief ranger oversees one of the National Park Service’s largest and most complex Visitor and Resource Protection programs, covering 1.5 million acres, 10 million visitors annually, 7 marinas, 9 campgrounds, 4 entrance stations, 237 miles of paved roads, and over 800 miles of unimproved roads, plus aviation, fire, and emergency services units.

Responsibilities

Responsible for organization, training, and scheduling of staff and support services in the Division.

Manages and maintains external relations with other agencies.

Provides oversight and leadership for Emergency Services Support (aviation, EMS, SAR, fire, court services, physical security, etc).

Serves as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer, performing duties including detection and investigation of violations of federal criminal laws.

Time‑in‑Grade Requirements Merit Promotion applicants who were in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks must meet time‑in‑grade requirements by the closing date. For a

GS‑13

position, applicants must have served 52 weeks (one year) at the

GS‑12

level. All time‑in‑grade qualifications must be verified with a SF‑50.

Conditions of Employment

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Must meet Selective Service Registration Act requirements for males.

Subject to pre‑employment physical and drug testing.

Must possess a Type I Law Enforcement Commission (National Park Service).

Must carry a firearm while performing duties and maintain proficiency.

Must be free of any domestic violence convictions.

Must pass a negative drug test and may be subject to random testing.

Must operate a government or private motor vehicle; a valid driver’s license and motor vehicle operator’s license are required. Driver’s records must be submitted directly from state authorities.

Must wear a uniform in compliance with National Park Service standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.

May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, shift work, and travel (up to five nights per month) with a government charge card.

Meeting the financial disclosure reporting requirement and completing a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report within 30 days of appointment.

Qualifications

One‑year probationary period during which fitness, conduct, and alignment with Agency goals will be evaluated.

Physical fitness: Pass a medical examination and the Physical Efficiency Battery components (agility run, bench press, 1.5‑mile run), meeting the 25th percentile cutoff.

Must be physically fit for strenuous and physically demanding duties as determined by a qualified physician.

Experience and Selective Factors

At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to the GS‑12 grade level in the Federal service, including leading or supervising a law‑enforcement or resources‑protection program, interpreting regulations and policies, evaluating program activities, and drafting agreements.

Possession of or eligibility for a National Park Service Type I Law Enforcement Commission (must hold or have held it within the past three years).

Eligibility for secondary‑administrative law‑enforcement retirement under CSRS or FERS may apply; applicants must meet the specific service continuity and tenure requirements.
