Position Description The Harris County Flood Control District is responsible for reducing the risk of flooding in Harris County, the third most populated county in the United States. Its jurisdiction covers approximately 1,500 stormwater channels totaling nearly 2,500 miles, more than 60 regional detention basins totaling over 10,000 acres, and several wetlands mitigation banks, including Greens Bayou. The Design Technician role supports the Maintenance Engineering department by drafting construction documents, preparing exhibits, conducting record research, and entering data.

Essential Functions & Duties CAD & Drafting

Use computer-assisted drafting (CAD) equipment and software to produce detailed construction drawings, topographical profiles, and related construction documents from detailed surveys.

Convert rough sketches or drawings and other engineering data received from maintenance engineering designers or engineers into CAD drawings.

Plot construction plans showing profiles and cross‑sections.

Records & Documentation

Research archived drawings to determine the availability of existing plans on past projects.

Prepare record drawings.

Prepare maps and exhibits required by the department engineers.

Calculations

Compute quantities of excavation, fill, and other related construction materials for each project.

Additional Duties

Assume additional responsibilities as required, adapting to the District's evolving demands, responsibilities, needs, and objectives.

Qualifications Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience in design and drafting or a related field.

Experience with computer‑aided drafting (CAD).

Licensure

Valid Class "C" Texas Driver’s License.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office Professional (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel), GIS software, and ArcMap.

Familiarity with SharePoint and Adobe Acrobat Professional.

Attention to detail.

Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

Proficiency using computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents.

Physical Demands & Environmental Exposure

Frequent standing and walking; prolonged sitting for extended periods of time.

Frequent sorting, filing, shelving, and handling of documents, books, files, file drawers, and related materials and equipment required for clerical operations.

Occasional ascending/descending stairs, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying items up to 15 pounds.

Work is generally performed indoors in a typical office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature, air conditioning, and noise levels.

When at field locations, may be exposed to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture, air pollution, wind and dust, wildlife, flying/walking insects, vibration, and/or noise in excess of 85 decibels.

Employment May Be Contingent on Passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
