Job Description - Database Administrator I, II, III, Senior Role Overview: Oracle Database Appliance Specialist
Install, configure, and maintain Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) systems, including hardware setup, Oracle Linux, and integrated components such as Oracle ILOM and Grid Infrastructure.
Perform patching and upgrades for ODA bundles (BIOS, firmware, drivers, Oracle Appliance Manager, and RDBMS homes) to ensure system stability and compliance.
Demonstrate proficiency in Linux system administration and networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, VLANs, DNS, firewall rule configuration, and adherence to enterprise security standards for secure ODA environments.
Show strong troubleshooting skills for complex hardware, software, and network issues, with the ability to coordinate with Oracle Support and apply best practices for high availability and security.
Position Description Provide technical expertise in the design, implementation, and maintenance of relational database management systems (RDBMSs) and data integration systems that support corporate business applications. Responsible for the technical support of multiple database and middleware environments, from various vendors, that run company‑wide business applications and are accessed by multiple departments.
Position‑Related Responsibilities
Maintain development, test, and production RDBMS environments.
Plan, install, maintain, modify, and patch or upgrade database software, middleware, hardware and associated toolsets.
Interact with vendor support to address and resolve issues.
Recommend system architectures, configure databases, handle backup and recovery activities, monitor and tune systems, and produce reports.
Monitor and tune relational databases to optimize performance, resource usage, and physical implementations for multi‑terabyte Business Intelligence systems.
Participate in the integration, maintenance/conversion, capacity planning, and installation of databases for new applications.
Develop scripts and programming to support automated database support processes.
Prepare, administer, and copy or clone production databases to test systems.
Collaborate with system administrators to execute failover, fallback, disaster recovery, and other procedures for high availability and system tuning.
Monitor and maintain, in cooperation with data security administrators, database security and database security software.
Perform data management tasks for extracting, loading, transforming, editing and restoring data. Prepare and present audits and reports for management.
Conduct backups, restore and recover data as required.
Assist developers with writing and tuning SQL queries.
Maintain Unix shell scripts, particularly Korn shell scripts.
Operate on a scheduled 24‑hour on‑call basis.
Perform other job‑related duties as assigned by management.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Minimum Qualifications Level I
High school diploma or GED.
Working toward a bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science or related disciplines.
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Proficient in programming and SQL skills.
UNIX and/or Windows operating system experience required.
Project management experience desirable.
Minimum of 3 years of IT experience in the application development or system support field.
0 to 2 years of professional experience with Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server RDBMSs preferred.
Level II
All the knowledge, skills and abilities of a Database Administrator I.
Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science or related disciplines is required.
Demonstrated ability to work with a scheduler such as UC4 and/or cron.
Project management experience preferred.
Minimum 5 years of IT experience in the application development or system support field.
Minimum 4 years of professional experience with Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server RDBMSs is required.
Minimum 2 years of application database experience with a major application provider is preferred.
Level III
All the knowledge, skills and abilities of a Database Administrator II.
Proficiency with Oracle and/or SQL Server tools, utilities, and application servers preferred.
Proficient in supporting Oracle Middleware preferred.
Proficient in data modeling and design preferred.
Minimum 7 years of IT experience in the application development or system support field.
Minimum 6 years of professional experience with Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server RDBMSs is required.
Minimum 4 years of application database experience with a major application provider is preferred.
Senior
All the knowledge, skills and abilities of a Database Administrator III plus leadership abilities.
Demonstrated leadership abilities.
Project management experience required.
Proficient in Oracle and/or SQL Server tools and utilities required.
Proficiency in supporting Oracle Middleware required.
Proficiency in data modeling and design required.
Strong interpersonal skills required to lead IS staff members and maintain effective relations with clients.
