Associate Engineer – HAZLOC Regulatory Compliance
Location: Cortland, NY • Employment type: Full‑time • Salary: $24–$34 per hour (hourly).
Job Description Intertek is searching for an Associate Engineer to join our Electrical HAZLOC team in our Cortland, NY office. This role offers a versatile career in safety compliance for hazardous locations, involving electrical testing and evaluation of products to meet U.S., Canadian and international safety standards.
What you’ll do
Read and determine applicability of national codes and standards clauses for the EUT (equipment under test).
Read and understand schematics and manufacturing instructions.
Identify and locate test instruments and equipment required for testing under the scope of the project.
Validate the project scope and sample applicability.
Perform testing of products in accordance with standards.
Complete preliminary design reviews (PDR) both on and off site.
Develop, set up, and follow established test plans.
Set up and operate standard test equipment including spectrum analyzer, oscilloscope, multimeter, signal generators, amplifiers, surge generator and basic hand tools.
Follow sample handling procedures, ensuring that each sample is logged in and out of the system, properly packaged for shipment, and moved through the facility as needed.
Compile test results during construction review and testing, prepare data and product description, and create final report using the established report shell.
Communicate project status and test results to client, sales personnel, and management throughout testing.
Provide quotation information such as project length, site requirements, rental equipment, samples, and applicable standards.
Acquire advanced product knowledge in one category; become a reviewer or resident expert as needed.
Provide ongoing support to clients and sales, such as attending client visits.
Document engineering judgments within policy guidelines and recommend solutions.
Mentor less senior technical personnel.
Perform in‑situ jobs as required.
Perform other duties as needed.
Minimum Requirements & Qualifications
Associate’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience and training.
At least 1 year of directly related experience.
Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
Strong organization and time‑management skills.
Customer‑service oriented and quality driven.
Self‑motivated and able to work independently in a fast‑paced, multi‑tasking environment.
Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
Ability to make technical decisions under supervision in standardized situations.
Detail–oriented with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.
Fundamental technical and administrative skills required for the job duties.
Ability to travel as business needs dictate up to 25 % of the time.
Valid driver’s license with a reliable driving record.
Applicants must complete an I‑9 verification and be legally eligible to work in the U.S.; must reside in the U.S.
Preferred Requirements & Qualifications
2+ years of directly related experience.
Project management experience.
Electrical or electronic experience or training.
Knowledge of electrical circuit design/analysis principles.
Experience with product safety standards (ANSI, CSA, UL, EN, IEC, etc.).
