Role Overview
We are seeking a Shipping Supervisor to oversee and coordinate daily shipping, warehousing, and transportation operations. This role supports the Logistics and Warehouse Manager by ensuring efficient shipment execution, compliance with regulations, cost‑effective carrier utilization, and effective supervision of warehouse staff.
The ideal candidate is hands‑on, operationally strong, and capable of managing people, processes, and priorities in a fast‑paced warehouse and manufacturing environment.
Primary Responsibilities
Shipping, Logistics & Warehouse Operations
Plan and manage logistics, warehouse, transportation, and customer service activities.
Coordinate and negotiate with freight carriers including LTL, partial shipments, brokers, direct carriers, intermodal, rail, and over‑the‑road providers; occasional coordination with import/export and drayage carriers.
Track and monitor quality, quantity, inventory levels, delivery times, transportation costs, and operational efficiency.
Arrange warehouse layout, catalog goods, plan shipping routes, and process outbound shipments.
Determine shipment placement within trucks, containers, and boxcars based on space, weight, and legal load limits.
Determine routing and ensure compliance with state weight limits and transportation regulations.
Inspect loading operations, seal shipments, and verify compliance with shipping specifications.
Direct movement of shipments between receiving, storage, production, and shipping areas.
Prepare bills of lading, post shipping weights and charges, and maintain shipping documentation.
Control inventory through physical counts and reconciliation with inventory systems.
Oversee baling and disposal of high‑volume warehouse waste.
Coordinate vehicle maintenance reporting for forklifts and bobtail trucks.
Compliance, Safety & Facility Management
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local warehousing, material handling, and shipping regulations.
Maintain warehouse condition by planning layouts, inspecting equipment, and initiating repair or replacement requests.
Safeguard warehouse operations and inventory by enforcing security procedures and protocols.
Provide direct logistical support to the Sales team for delivery planning and route scheduling for new and prospective clients.
Collaborate with internal departments to ensure operational alignment and customer satisfaction.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Schedule, assign, and monitor warehouse staff to meet operational requirements.
Conduct new hire orientation and ongoing employee training.
Provide on‑the‑spot coaching, performance feedback, and disciplinary action when necessary.
Ensure consistent attendance, productivity, and adherence to policies and procedures.
Requirements
Minimum Required Qualifications
Proven experience as a Shipping Supervisor or similar logistics leadership role
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills
Excellent negotiation skills with carriers and service providers
Knowledge of small parcel shipments (FedEx, UPS)
Knowledge of domestic transportation requirements and basic import/export processes
Working knowledge of NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification)
Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and manage warehouse staff
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
Reliable and consistent attendance with schedule flexibility as needed
High school diploma or equivalent
Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Preferred experience with ERP systems and barcode scanners
