The City of Morgan Hill is currently recruiting for one Utility Worker in the Engineering & Utilities Department.

This classification is flexibly staffed as Utility Worker I or Utility Worker II, and the position may be filled at either level.

UTILITY WORKER I DEFINITION Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi‑skilled work in the maintenance of water supply and wastewater collection system facilities and appurtenances; performs related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS Utility Worker I is the journey level class in this maintenance series.

It differs from Utility Worker II in that the latter requires the ability to independently perform a number of assigned tasks skillfully and safely while providing limited lead direction to a small crew on a job site. Operation of equipment, vehicles, and power tools is a regular responsibility of the Utility Worker I class.

UTILITY WORKER II DEFINITION Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled work in the maintenance of water supply and wastewater collection system facilities and appurtenances; performs related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS Utility Worker II is the advanced journey‑level class of this series and incumbents are competent to independently perform a number of assigned tasks skillfully and safely. Operation of equipment, vehicles, and power tools is a regular responsibility of this class. The position requires a Grade I Water Treatment Operator Certificate or a Wastewater Collection System Operator Certificate or equivalent.

UTILITY WORKER I RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform a variety of work to maintain water wells, chemical feeder equipment, pumps, motors, telemeter sensory equipment, treated water storage facilities, water distribution pipelines, and related appurtenances; maintain sanitary sewers and pumping equipment.

Ensure proper treatment of water from local groundwater sources.

Take water samples and conduct field tests to confirm treatment procedures and adjust chemical feeders accordingly.

Change chemical drums to maintain continuous flow.

Ensure storage reservoirs are maintained at proper operating levels.

Make minor repairs and adjustments to tools and equipment.

Answer inquiries from citizens regarding work performed.

Maintain accurate records of work performed.

Assist other maintenance crews in emergency situations.

UTILITY WORKER II RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform a variety of advanced skilled work to maintain water wells, chemical feeder equipment, pumps, motors, telemetering sensory equipment, treated water storage facilities, water distribution pipelines, and related appurtenances; maintain sanitary sewers and pumping equipment.

Ensure proper treatment of water from local groundwater sources.

Take water samples and conduct field tests to confirm treatment procedures and adjust chemical feeders accordingly.

Perform maintenance work in support of sewer line flushing program and the pump maintenance program.

Change chemical drums to maintain continuous flow.

Ensure storage reservoirs are maintained at proper operating levels.

Make minor repairs and adjustments to tools and equipment.

Answer inquiries from citizens regarding work performed.

Maintain accurate records of work performed.

Assist other maintenance crews in emergency situations.

UTILITY WORKER I REQUIREMENTS Education & Experience:

Completion of high school or equivalent.

Licenses & Certificates:

Pass written exam to obtain Class A driving permit within six months of hire and possession of a valid California Class A driver’s license within one year.

Acquire a State of California Department of Health Services Water Distribution Operator Grade I within probationary period.

Other Requirements:

Pass a spirometry test prior to hire.

Work extended hours as required and respond within 30 minutes to yard stand‑by duty.

Respond to emergencies on a 24‑hour stand‑by basis.

Wear respirator.

Work within confined spaces.

Climb 40‑50 feet on ladder.

Knowledge of:

Use and care of common hand tools.

Safety practices pertaining to work.

Basic shop arithmetic.

Basic mechanical maintenance practices and methods.

Skill in:

Following oral and written instructions.

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in course of work.

Dealing tactfully and effectively with the public.

UTILITY WORKER II REQUIREMENTS Education & Experience:

Completion of high school or equivalent.

Two years of semi‑skilled and skilled maintenance work on pumps, motors, pipelines and related facilities; preference for experience operating excavation equipment such as backhoe.

Licenses & Certificates:

Possession of a valid State of California D1 Water Distribution Certificate at hire.

Acquire a State of California Grade I Water Treatment Operator Certificate or a California Water Environment Association Grade I Collection System Maintenance Certificate within probationary period.

Pass written exam for Class A driving permit within six months of hire and possession of valid California Class A driver’s license within one year.

Other Requirements:

Demonstrate understanding of responsibilities of a lead role on utility system maintenance.

Work extended hours as required and respond within 30 minutes to yard stand‑by duty.
