LOCATION OF POSITION Stevensville, MD (Queen Annes County)

Main Purpose of Job The Department of Natural Resources (Chesapeake Finfish Program – Stevensville, MD and Striped Bass Program – Annapolis, MD), is currently accepting applications for a Seasonal Contractual. This position will assist in several fishery independent and dependent surveys around the Chesapeake Bay region. The primary work location will be Matapeake Field Station in Stevensville, MD. There is no anticipated overtime pay or comp time, and health benefits are not offered.

Position Duties

Assist in multiple fisheries surveys conducted with gill nets, trawls, fyke nets, pound nets, seines and hook and line targeting recreationally and commercially important fish species.

Sample commercially harvested species at commercial seafood dealers.

Assist in preparation of ageing structures and other samples collected during field sampling.

Assist in maintenance and repair of sampling equipment.

Data entry and management using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.

Work schedule and physical working conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in variable and sometimes adverse weather conditions. Ability to work in hot, cold, and wet conditions, in and around water. Ability to lift and move fifty (50) pounds. Occasional weekend and holiday work may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma is required.

Experience: None.

Desired or Preferred Qualifications

Two years of experience performing technical work in the field of fisheries, wildlife, forestry, aquaculture or natural resources management.

Experience in fish handling/identification and utilizing fish sampling gear (seines, trawls, gill nets, etc.).

Experience working aboard and or trailering a boat.

Experience with spreadsheet data entry and manipulation.

Benefits Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits. Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year. *Should benefits be available, this information will be discussed at the time of hire
