Overview

Laboratory Technician - Science (Temporary) Under general supervision of the assigned manager/supervisor, performs specialized and technical duties in the operation and maintenance of science instructional laboratories and stockrooms, including hazardous material storage, cleanup, and disposal. Prepares, receives, stocks, and issues laboratory supplies, materials, and equipment; coordinates budgetary requisitions and expenditures for laboratory supplies and equipment; repairs, alterations, preventative maintenance contracts, and blanket purchase orders; and trains and directs student help. Typical Duties / Responsibilities

Generate purchase orders for supplies, materials, and equipment needed for laboratories; prepare instructional materials and equipment for instructor demonstrations and student use. Organize and facilitate the collection, cleanup, and disposal of biohazardous or toxic chemical waste; interface with hazardous waste disposal vendors; ensure compliance with state and local health and safety regulations and proper storage and disposal of hazardous materials. Maintain the stockroom and laboratory in a safe, clean, and orderly condition, including functional checks on safety equipment (eyewash stations, showers, fire extinguishers, hoods). Ensure availability of supplies, materials, and equipment for laboratories; provide training for instructors and new technicians in stockroom operations. Prepare and issue materials and equipment for student use; clean, sterilize, and perform minor repairs to laboratory and stockroom equipment. Train and direct student help; operate a variety of equipment related to the science lab and stockroom; order, receive, and store supplies, materials, and equipment; communicate results of tests and analyses; maintain records and reports related to laboratory operations. Operate a computer for word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications; maintain inventories and accountability records in the storeroom; control expenditures within the assigned budget; provide data for budget estimates. Operate a motor vehicle as needed; meet with science faculty and instructional assistants to assist in the design and development of experiments and demonstrations; perform related duties as required. subject areas

Biology:

Prepare and maintain microbial cultures and media; prepare solutions; handle living organisms; work with preserved organisms; operate autoclaves; clean labs and stockroom glassware and equipment; use dissecting tools. Chemistry:

Prepare materials for instructors, including solutions and reagents; test and analyze chemical properties; maintain a chemical library for student check‑outs; manage lockers, inventory, and breakage records. Physics:

Prepare equipment for instructors; assemble items for demonstrations; perform basic repairs; collect and compare data; maintain sensors and probes; may work with nuclear materials. Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

One year of responsible and successful work experience in a science laboratory or stockroom, or equivalent training. Education:

Completion of two years of college with 19 semester units in Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics. Note: Additional experience or education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
