Position Summary
The Dental Hygienist is a vital member of the dental team in a Federally Qualified Health Center – Look Alike (FQHC-LAL) dental clinic, responsible for delivering preventive oral care, providing patient education, and supporting the dentist in maintaining high standards of clinical care. This role ensures patients, especially underserved and vulnerable populations, receive thorough, compassionate, and evidence-based hygiene services.
Key Responsibilities
Perform oral prophylaxis (cleanings), including scaling and polishing teeth
Conduct oral cancer screenings and periodontal assessments
Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays)
Educate patients on oral hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention
Apply preventive materials such as fluoride varnish and sealants
Document patient care and treatment plans accurately in the electronic dental record
Sign and close charts in a timely manner
Assist the dentist with patient care when necessary
Maintain infection control protocols and ensure cleanliness of operatory and instruments
Coordinate with the Dental Coordinator to ensure necessary hygiene supplies are available
Adhere to all state dental hygiene laws and regulations
In the absence of a designated dental assistant, independently carry out room turnover, take x-rays, and tend to hygiene patients
Required Qualifications
Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited program
Active state license to practice as a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH)
CPR/BLS certification
Proficient in taking radiographs and using dental software
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in community health, pediatric, or multi-specialty dental settings
Bilingual skills (Spanish, Arabic, Hmong, etc.) a plus
Familiarity with Wisdom, Dentrix, Eaglesoft, or other dental EHRs
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Clinical setting with exposure to bodily fluids, sharp instruments, and dental equipment
Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods
Use of PPE required during patient care
