Sr. Scientist - Histology Technician - (8334) The total hourly pay for this exempt position is $70.82 for up to 40 hours per week. This rate represents the company’s good faith and reasonable estimate of possible compensation at the time of posting. Cape Fox Facilities Services is seeking an experienced Senior Scientist - Histology Technician to provide services in support of the overall functions of the Office of Chief Scientist - Integrated Research Facility (OCSIRF) within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The Pathology Core will provide Pathology, Histology and Clinical Pathology support for all animal studies performed at the Integrated Research Facility-Frederick (IRF-Frederick). This also include support of organoid or organ-chip research programs. The Pathology team will perform and assist necropsies performed at IRF-Frederick, will process all collected tissues following accepted SOPs, will perform immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and special stain assays on collected tissue and will analyze and interpret pathology slides. The Pathology Core will also provide written reports for all analyses and support manuscript writing as requested. Pathologists within the Core are also expected to pursue their own research interests within the scope of material collected during the course of research activities at the IRF-Frederick and with the concurrence of the project lead. Manuscripts for any research activities should be written for peer-reviewed publications and presentation at national and international conferences or symposia.

Responsibilities

Provide histology services required to support animal studies, such as providing necropsy support to the pathologists and for ordering and maintaining stock of chemicals, reagents, antibodies, and supplies required for necropsy and histology support.

Assist in scanning slides, organizing the digital pathology database, and performing basic digital analysis of slides as requested by pathologists.

Perform molecular pathology assays and experiments such as in situ hybridization (ISH), special applications of histology (e.g. special stains) and immunohistochemistry (IHC).

Operate in the BSL-4 laboratory.

Perform tissue embedding, sectioning and mounting protocols.

Conduct histology, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization protocols.

Assist with developing SOPs for new assays and technologies.

Travel Requirements 0 – 10%

Job Requirements Travel and Training Requirements:

Travel is not anticipated but may be approved in writing at the recommendation of the Task Leader and with approval by the Contracting Officer.

Training includes any NIH and/or HHS required training for access to and work in the IRF BSL2 and BSL4 laboratories.

Other Requirements:

Work will be performed up to 40 hours per week during normal business hours, Monday-Friday, excluding Federal holidays.

However, work can run past business hours and flexibility will be needed, to potentially include weekends and holidays. The contractor will be responsible for scheduling.

Telework may be authorized if approved by the Task Leader, COR, and the Contracting Officer.

Must be able to work in a BSL-4 setting with select agents and be enrolled in the NIAID-IRF Frederick Biosurety program to include passing and maintaining Tier-III security clearance.

Specific Qualifications:

Minimum of a full 4-year course of study from an accredited college or university leading to a B.S. or higher degree in a relevant field.

Minimum of 3 years work in a histology laboratory.

Histotechnologist (HTL) certification preferred.

Previous recent BSL-3 or BSL-4 experience preferred.
