Summary You will be part of the Mental Health Service at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center - in the role of senior licensed professional mental health counselor (LPMHC) within the Mental Health ICC. You will provide clinical psychosocial/psychotherapeutic care to Veterans enrolled in Primary Care Teams (PACT). Services are provided at the main Chillicothe site or at a Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC). This role is collaborative and extends the reach of other programs.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship – You MUST be a citizen of the United States. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency – LPMHCs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 – Part II – chapter 3 – section A – paragraph 3.j.

Education – Hold a master’s or doctoral degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling, or a related field accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Related fields include but are not limited to Addiction Counseling, Community Counseling, Gerontology Counseling, Marital‑Couple‑and‑Family Counseling. Traditional Rehabilitation counseling programs that are accredited by CACREP do not meet the LPMHC qualification standards.

Licensure – Persons hired must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor.

Grandfather Provision – May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision.

Experience – Candidates must have at least one year of progressively complex LPMHC experience equivalent to GS‑11, and senior LPMHCs must have five years of post‑licensed experience demonstrating advanced practice skills and the ability to supervise trainees.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (GS‑11 & above) – Ability to make professional evaluations, decisions, and treatment recommendations; advanced counseling knowledge; crisis intervention; use of DSM for diagnosis; develop and facilitate psychotherapy and psycho‑education groups; expert knowledge of modalities for complex mental illness; coordinate specialized services; provide consultation; teach and supervise; communicate with leadership and stakeholders.

Preferred Experience – Primary Care Mental Health Integration.

Physical Requirements

– The work is primarily sedentary, requires travel between buildings, may need physical restraint application, assistance to disabled clients, standing, walking, bending, lifting moderately heavy items, etc.

Duties

Provides a full range of triage and evaluation services in the primary care setting, including general functional evaluation of emotional and behavioral problems and suicide assessment.

Provides psychosocial interventions, emphasizing brief evidence‑based approaches.

Facilitates patient and family education appropriate to the primary care setting.

Provides consultation to support PCP decision‑making.

Determines level of care need for patients and understands clinical options.

Advocates locally, collaborating with medical and human service agencies, county boards, and law enforcement.

Develops and maintains professional standards of practice and educates others.

Maintains continuity of care practices, manages quality control, and evaluates effectiveness.

Manages work schedule Monday through Friday, 8:00‑4:30, with telework available as per policy.
