Corewell Health
About The Unit
The Prince Surgical Critical Care Unit is a 22‑bed intensive care unit in the Meijer Heart Center at Butterworth Hospital. The surgical ICU specializes in the care of critically ill trauma and surgical patients, including geriatric rib fractures, traumatic brain injury, multi‑trauma, and critical care adult burn cases. Nurses also care for medical and neuro‑critically ill patients. They are competent in ventilator support, life‑sustaining titratable medications (cardiac and sedation), and procedures such as bedside tracheostomies and central line placement. With experience, ICU nurses can become specialty trained in continuous renal replacement therapy and burn patient management. The unit is fast‑paced, relies on teamwork and an interdisciplinary approach, and provides nurses with detailed assessment skills, critical thinking, and communication development.
