About the Position This highly responsible and professional Registered Nurse Specialist position serves within Nursing Services at Florida State Hospital (FSH), a mental health treatment facility owned and operated by the state. The role requires independent judgment, a proactive approach, and exceptional attention to detail. Florida State Hospital is a tobacco‑free facility.

Key Responsibilities

Administer or supervise administration of medications (all forms), bloodwork, IVs, treatments, specimen collection, and related nursing duties per Unit Dose Policy 150-35 of Florida State Hospital.

Participate in hospital infection control program/policies/guidelines (FSHOP's 153's) with daily documentation and routing to Infection Control Nurse for daily report.

Participate in assessment and formulation of initial service plan and subsequent plans of care for residents assigned.

Prepare or supervise nurse in preparing resident for EKG, consults, x‑rays, and related procedures.

Assess, implementation, and documentation of manual holds, seclusion/restraint processes utilizing required documentation/forms.

Assist the medical physician during sick calls, physical examinations, or as needed.

Ensure consultations, lab slips, x‑ray reports, and related documents are properly reviewed and followed up with physicians/ARNP/PA as needed.

Coordinate residents’ appointments outside the unit.

Provide emergency nursing care and examination of injuries with documentation and follow‑up care as needed.

Maintain and inventory medical equipment; report repairs to supervisor.

Order and maintain adequate resident nursing supplies; inventory and discard outdated supplies.

Respond to residents’ rights and advocacy issues; adhere to unit, hospital, and departmental policies and guidelines.

Accept and execute written, oral, and phone orders from physicians, psychiatrists, ARNPs, PAs, or dentists; transcribe orders and initiate or carry out orders.

Participate in formulation of individualized residents’ treatment plans.

Admit and transfer residents to and from the home unit or other hospital facilities with proper forms and documentation.

Designate mode of travel for residents with medical problems traveling off the ward in conjunction with physician.

Provide individualized and group counseling to residents (behavioral, medication, treatment) and psychotherapy as needed.

Participate in resident evaluations, diagnoses, and development of each resident’s treatment and discharge plan with the treatment team; prepare nursing care assessments and service implementation plans for designated residents.

Serve as a resource person to other nurses for training and continuing education activities; work with supervisor in scheduling and approving attendance to outside training activities as needed.

Monitor, supervise, and evaluate unlicensed assistive personnel in performing assigned nursing functions per DCF OP 155‑5; provide training as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Ability to analyze complex reports and determine the service utilization habits of clients and evaluate the appropriateness of that utilization.

Ability to lift, pull, and squat.

Knowledge of and utilization of the principles of Total Quality Management.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210‑8.27, and two years of professional nursing experience, with at least one year in a specialty area or a Bachelor of Science in nursing.
