Job Summary
Plans and implements specific treatment programs for individual pediatric patients according to principles and practices of Physical Therapy.
Collaborates with interdisciplinary treatment team; accountable to the Clinical Coordinator of Rehab Services.
Responsibilities
Reviews requisitions for Physical Therapy
Interviews patients, evaluates physical condition and needs
Develops a program of corrective exercise and treatment
Determines proper equipment usage and adjustments (exercise, gait training, soft tissue mobility, whirlpool, hot packs, ultrasound, paraffin, ice packs, electrical stimulation, traction)
Instructs patients on proper use of wheelchairs, crutches, canes, braces, prosthetic appliances and devices
Recommends modifications or changes in patient program based on evaluation of progress
Confers as necessary with physicians regarding alternatives available
Prepares written documentation (evaluation results, treatment plans, progress reports, discharge summaries)
Communicates observations, facts and comments with nursing and interdisciplinary team members for efficient coordination of health care plan
Provides guidance and direction to staff members assisting in patient care
Maintains department policies, procedures, objectives, and quality initiative program, safety and infection control
Adheres to hospital-wide safety responsibilities (maintain safe environment, knowledge of safety policies, safe equipment use, wear safety clothing, report unsafe conditions, attend safety programs)
Assists Clinical Coordinator with quality initiative indicators and department equipment/supplies maintenance
Attends meetings, participates on committees as directed
Assists in transport of patients as needed
Assumes duties of Senior Therapists in absence
Enhances professional growth through educational programs, literature, in-service meetings, workshops, mandatory annual courses
Provides age-appropriate care to neonate, infant, children, adolescent, adult, geriatric patients
Interacts with patients in a friendly, caring manner, attends to their psychological and physical needs, maintains communication to ensure a secure and pleasant experience
Qualifications
Must be licensed or eligible to obtain a license to practice physical therapy in NYS at time of hire
Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date
Experience in a hospital setting preferred
Physical demands: ability to lift at least thirty pounds independently and one-hundred fifty pounds with assistance; appreciable physical effort or strain; may involve lifting, pushing, pulling; occasional repetitive efforts
Exposure category: Category II; may involve unplanned Category I tasks
Performs all aspects of universal precautions when engaging in patient care
