The purpose of this Preschool Cooperative is to provide comprehensive preschool and child development educational programs responsive to the needs of families and children of this and surrounding communities and to foster the mental, physical, and emotional growth and well‑being of each child enrolled in the programs offered by the Cooperative. Our school is constituted as a PARENTS’ COOPERATIVE and operated by parents through a Board of Directors. Parental participation is the lifeblood of the school. The Sewanee Children’s Center offers a comprehensive early learning program designed to meet the developmental needs of each child. The program is responsive to the needs of local families and children. The Sewanee Children’s Center provides a child‑centered, play‑based learning environment in which a child can grow intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially. The child’s curiosity is the driving force leading the child through the day’s activities; teachers observe, support, question, and facilitate deeper learning. We want every child to experience success, a feeling of self‑worth, and a love of learning. Each child is encouraged to explore ideas, materials, concepts, and skills in an unhurried and inviting environment. A child thereby learns through direct experience. We are inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education. In this climate of community and collaboration, teachers and children learn from each other. We believe that honoring the children’s wonder and curiosity and providing guided opportunities for them to both express their thoughts and ideas and to seek answers to their questions will lead to development of intellectual and academic skills. In order to provide quality early childhood education and support our values and commitment to our community, the Board of Directors mandates that our enrollment follow the guidelines of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) for staff‑children ratios within group size. The school has always welcomed children of all faiths and, notwithstanding its long and warm association with The Parish of St. Mark & St. Paul, does not bias its program in favor of any particular faith. In keeping with the Reggio Emilia philosophy, we strive to nurture each child’s curiosity and creativity by providing the time and space in which they can explore their questions with independence and persistence. By providing a safe and loving environment that is sensitive to one’s physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development, we foster an enthusiasm for discovery and life‑long learning. We believe that children and adults alike must be granted the time and support needed to explore, hypothesize, and take risks in learning and teaching. Careful listening, observation, and documentation of children’s “work” enable us to help parents to better understand their children’s behavior and development.

Your support will help us advance the quality of every child's one childhood.

Together, we are empowering exceptional education.
