Summary This position is an integral part of the urgent care team and requires the ability to work effectively with Providers and ancillary staff to deliver high quality, compassionate patient care. Under direct supervision of the provider, you will be responsible for assessment, care, and education of patients in the urgent care/occupational health setting. You must have basic knowledge of specialty and/or primary care symptom management to be able to assess, plan, and deliver timely and appropriate care, especially in emergent situations. The position will assure compliance with all the policies/procedures of MyMichigan Health, OSHA guidelines, CLIA regulations, and all appropriate regulatory agencies. The licensed practical nurse (LPN) may be required to participate in the training of new employees, students, and float staff. May also perform general office duties (keyboarding, filing, telephone, computer and office equipment) as required by the practice. The expectations outlined in this job description may vary slightly depending on the practice in which you are assigned.

Responsibilities

(50%) Greets patients and/or family, takes vital signs, obtains/reviews medical, social, surgical and medication history, and allergy information. Prepares patient for examination, performs procedures (in office labs: urinalysis, pregnancy testing, strep screens; electrocardiogram (EKG’s), tuberculosis (TB) testing, etc.) and reports results to providers. Communicates information regarding testing, procedures and follow up care to patient in a clear, concise and professional manner.

(20%) Accurately documents all patient information in the medical record according to current guidelines.

(10%) Triages emergency patients, assessing condition and responding clinically as needed to stabilize the patient. According to protocols, administers immediate treatment when indicated and notifies physician of priority.

(10%) Administers medications as prescribed by provider. Assists provider with examinations and procedures.

(10%) Prepares and cleans the patient area, sets up equipment, cleans and facilitates room set up after a procedure. Disposes of contaminated supplies and sterilizes medical instruments.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Provides a complete patient assessment, as indicated within the scope of the practice.

Places and receives calls to previously seen patients to evaluate patient progress, gives results of laboratory or radiographic interpretations.

Demonstrate competency to assist with procedures such as, but not limited to venipuncture, OCL splinting, electrocardiogram (EKG), Pulmonary Function Test (PFT), audiometry, vision testing, dressing changes, respirator fit testing, drug and alcohol testing.

Respirator Fit testing requires the ability to learn and maintain knowledge of various mask types and proper mask fitting according to OSHA regulations.

Completes daily tasks as outlined by the practice, such as referrals to specialists and/or primary care, EMR tasks, patient result notification, prior authorizations and communication to companies and/or workers compensation as appropriate.

Complies with company protocols, organizational departmental policies and protocols, local, state Michigan OSHA, and federal (CLIA/JC-Joint Commission /FMCSA-Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) guidelines while conducting daily duties.

Performs CLIA testing and maintains quality control logs.

Performs autoclave procedures according to policy.

Participate as needed in continuous quality improvement projects and activities. This includes daily, weekly, monthly checks of equipment, supplies and medications. Staff may be asked to participate in organizational performance improvement projects.

Maintaining a clean, sterile and safe environment. If applicable, may be required to travel to satellite clinics.

Demonstrates critical thinking for patient management.

Maintains a high level of confidentiality and ensures patient’s rights in accordance with proper procedures and in compliance with HIPAA.

May be asked to perform clerical duties—filling out insurance forms, correspondence, arranging hospital admission, answering the telephone, updating/filing patient’s medical records. Orders supplies and medications.

Orders all medical, pharmacy supplies, and office supplies to manage patient care.

Ensures all EMR tasks are completed in a timely manner.

Certifications and Licensures

BLS: Basic Life Support

Within 3 months of hire or transfer

LPN: Licensed Practical Nurse

Required Education High school diploma or GED is required.

Experience, Training and Skills Must be able to successfully complete the coursework and certification for drug and alcohol testing within 90 days of hire or transfer. Excellent interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully to internal and external customers. Previous experience in an urgent care or occupational health setting and/or medical practice. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the organization’s Infor Lawson, Electronic Medical Records, and Practice Management programs preferred or knowledge of similar software.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitutes if required for your position. Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit, stand, walk for long periods of time; may require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake. Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis. Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
