General Description The Wyoming Public Health Laboratory (WPHL) Microbiology Program is seeking a Laboratory Scientist under an At‑Will Employee Contract (AWEC). This role focuses heavily on quality control, workflow coordination, and digital process management. The position supports statewide testing and surveillance activities for SARS‑CoV‑2 and other infectious diseases while ensuring daily laboratory operations are organized, efficient, and aligned with program needs.

Responsibilities

Assist with maintaining quality control processes across laboratory testing workflows.

Use ClickUp to track tasks, organize documentation, and monitor progress toward laboratory goals.

Support process‑improvement activities by maintaining records, monitoring adherence to established procedures, and assisting with corrective or preventive documentation.

Perform molecular testing procedures such as nucleic acid extraction, real‑time PCR, and related assays, including SARS‑CoV‑2 testing.

Provide general support for sequencing workflows, wastewater testing activities, or other laboratory processes as needed.

Assist with SOP drafting, review, and updates, with attention to clarity and accuracy.

Participate in routine method validation tasks, equipment checks, reagent quality control, and related documentation.

Support sample accessioning, data entry, and routine specimen handling to maintain organized laboratory operations.

Assist with routine operational tasks such as waste management, shipping and receiving, supply organization, and other duties that contribute to daily laboratory readiness.

Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support program goals and evolving public health priorities.

Qualifications

Experience with digital workflow or project‑management platforms (e.g., ClickUp).

Prior experience in a clinical, public health, or research laboratory setting.

Familiarity with molecular diagnostic methods such as PCR or nucleic acid extraction.

Experience with quality systems, documentation control, or laboratory accreditation standards.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment.

Knowledge

Knowledge of general laboratory quality control practices and procedures.

Strong written, verbal, electronic, and interpersonal communication skills.

Understanding of basic scientific principles and laboratory disciplines.

Familiarity with routine laboratory techniques, including sterile practices and standard workflows.

Working knowledge of Google Suite and the ability to use digital tools to support documentation and communication.

Physical Working Conditions

The employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, driving an automobile, etc.
